Chapter Eight

~Sakura's POV~

Holy fuck...

"S-S-Sasuke?" I mutter. My brain is literally exploding at this point, with hundreds of undefinable emotions. Surprisingly, I read the same amount of emotions on Sasuke's face.

The nostalgia is unreal.

He's about to say something when the windows shatter, and explosions go off. Everything is a blur, and my friends shout for their significant others, which I find quite adorable. And the person who calls my name isn't who I really truly want to call my name. Ryuu shouts for me. I catch a glimpse of Sasuke reaching for me, but Ryuu's arm finds me first, and I'm pushed to the ground as debris scatters the floor around us.

Screams and yells can be heard from the city below. Kakashi, Sasuke, and Naruto are the first ones on their feet, and a small smile tugs at my lips at the sight of Hinata, practically glued to Naruto's side. Ryuu gets up as well, and from the corner of my eye I catch Sasuke throw a glare at him as Ry helps me up, our hands connecting. Sasuke stares at the contact, but turns away quickly.

"What's going on?!" Kakashi yells, looking out at his chaotic village.

Suddenly, someone from behind me grabs a handful of my hair and tugs, holding a kunai to my throat. A shriek escapes my lips, and everyone turns. I don't see Ryuu in the group in front of me, and my stomach drops.

The kunai blade presses deeper into my flesh and I squeal. No one even makes a move. I feel a pinch when he pierces skin, but the advancing stops. He just holds the knife there, letting me bleed over it and stain the metal.

A tear drips down my cheek and my eyes find Sasuke's. His onyx orbs looks agonized and desperate. He knows that if he even moves an inch I'm dead. And I'm sure there is some crazy Sharingan thing he can do, but he'll probably hurt me in the process.

I hear Ryuu cackle behind me, "What you going to do now, Sasuke?" He bends over and whispers in my ear, "Come on princess, we can't keep the master waiting, now can we?"

We start to walk backwards, and as I'm slowly dragged out of the office, I bite my lip and let a sob escape.

"Sasuke..."

~Naruto's POV~

I felt helpless. Totally helpless. Sakura would've died if any of us had moved to help her. Ryuu seems like a skilled Ninja, but Sasuke didn't say a word. He just stood their, taking the pain, watching her sob as her life was put in Ryuu's twisted hands.

Hinata looses her grip on the back of my jacket, and I feel her release her tensed form. Her hold on my hand also releases, which I'm less pleased about. She lets out a long breath, and I find myself relaxing. She presses her forehead into my back.

"We should go see what's happening down there. Sasuke," Kakashi says, but Sasuke doesn't turn. "I'm trusting you with Sakura."

Sasuke nods and disappears out the door in a matter of seconds.

"The rest of you, get down to the village, find the source of the problem. Hinata, Ino, Tenten, get people into their homes. Choji, Lee, make sure the elders are safe. Sai, go after Sasuke, make sure he doesn't do anything stupid. Shikamaru, Naruto, find the source of the problem and put it out. Got it? Go!"

Everyone goes their separate ways in a hurry, but I'm stopped by Hinata, who grabs my hand.

I turn, "What is it, Hinata?"

"Don't die," she says simply, and embraces me, wrapping her arms over my shoulders and squeezing me tight.

I hug her back, kissing the crook between her neck and shoulder. "I won't, I promise."

"You better," she mumbles, kissing the bottom of my jaw before turning and leaving the office. I'm left with shivers running up my spine, and I turn and jump out the window, a goofy smile plastered to my face.

Shikamaru is waiting for me on the rooftop of a building a ways away, a funny smirk on his otherwise emotionless face.

"What?" I ask him when I reach him.

He shrugs and smothers a laugh, jumping to the next building. I follow behind him, silently flipping him off without him knowing.

We move in silence, and I wait for a strange chakra to appear, but none does. The screaming seems to have stopped. Has the enemy retreated? Doubtful.

Suddenly, three men drop in front of Shikamaru, and he jumps back, extending an arm to stop me.

I'm standing right in front of these ninja, and yet I can't sense their chakra. Have they masked it? Is that even possible at such a close range?

"Well, well, well. If it isn't Naruto Uzumaki, the moron of the leaf," the head guy says, earning a chuckle from his friends.

I ball up my fists, "Who are you?"

"Well, you could ask your friend, Ryuu. Or is he still getting that poor broken girl with the pink hair?"

"They're just taunting you Naruto," Shikamaru mutters, sensing my anger.

"I don't care. What are you doing here?" I demand.

"Getting pinky, using her as bait against the Uchiha, killing you, destroying the village, draining some chakra, many things. To which are you referring?"

"You'll never get past us fellas," Shikamaru says flatly, drawing his hands together as if preparing for a hand sign. The two other guys step back a bit at the action, slightly frightened.

"Wanna bet?" the head guy smirks, brushing back a strand of his long red hair to reveal his eye. Which isn't in it's socket. In place of it, is a flame, burning bright and illuminating the hollowness of his empty socket.

"What the..."

Suddenly, Sasuke's chakra can be clearly sensed and an explosion follows. We all freeze, knowing what's going on. All we can do now is pray that Sasuke can do his job, and I have total faith...right?
