~Sai's POV~
I am thrown back by a gust of wind that is a leftover of the explosion up ahead. I know that Sasuke has caught up with Ryuu by now, and here I am, trailing behind, sadly knowing that Sasuke probably figured out I was following him.
I pick myself up from the ruble and continue on, ignoring the pain spiraling through my left shoulder. I sneak up to the corner ahead of me and peek around it, spotting Sasuke, Ryuu and Sakura.
Sakura has some odd characters written on her forehead and neck. She doesn't appear to be moving either, lying on the ground, burning and... bleeding? Black flames? No... it can't be.
~Sasuke's POV~
He stops and turns to me, holding Sakura up by her neck. But there is black words written across her forehead and her neck. What is that?
Her lids open an inch and I get a glimpse of her startling green eyes. They're watery, and the shine is gone. Is she dying? I got to hurry this up. She won't die. She can't die. No. I won't accept this.
My fists clench and I summon my Sharingan, when my rage takes over. I aim for his arms, setting them alight with black flames while muttering, "Amaterasu!"
A giant explosion commences and something, hopefully not a someone, goes flying. I dig my fingers into the dirt road below me and keep sturdy, my eyes trained on the place Ryuu used to be.
The dust settles, and my stomach drops. My skin crawls as I look at the wreckage. Ryuu stumbles to his feet, a smirk on his face. He watches me as my eyes find Sakura. Laying on the ground, on her side. Blood dripping from the previous wound in her neck, and what is that...
Oh my god. Black flames burn her skin.
My shock is replaced by pure horror as I put out the flames, realizing what I had done.
A whimper escapes her lips, and relief floods through me. I thought I had killed her. But she's not got long left.
A thought skips through my mind and I realize Ryuu and I are equal distance away from her. Ryuu seems to realize that at the same time, and we meet eyes. Everything stills. From behind me, I sense that Sai is watching. Maybe I can kill two birds with one stone...
I take off towards Sakura, my eyes trained on Ryuu. He's fast, as he takes off at the same time, kunai at the ready. I pretend that I'm going to grab Sakura, but fake it, and pounce on Ryuu, driving him into the dirt. I draw my sword and press it against his neck. He lies there, terror in his eyes. Blood spurts from the cut in his throat, and I here Sai approach from behind me.
"Stop Sasuke! We need him to save Sakura," he shouts.
I don't listen. If I kill the castor, the jutsu will vanish right?
Ryuu suddenly smiles and a laugh escapes his lips. "Listen to the eaves-dropper," he spits.
I dig the blade in further, and suddenly something hits me from the side, sending me flying. I collide with a brick wall and drop to the ground, pain spreading through my back.
Some time passes before I manage to open my eyes. A dull pain courses through the back of my skull, and it takes a while for my eyes to come into focus.
Ryuu's gone, but Sakura's still here. Sai lies on the ground, his chest slowly rising and falling. He's still alive? Well shit.
I groan as I bring myself to my feet. I shuffle towards Sai, who's eyes flutter open at the sound of my footsteps.
"Sasuke..." he mumbles.
"You let him get away?" I growl.
"Sasuke I..."
I grab him by the throat and lift him off the ground, holding him up in the air. "You think you can just tackle me with out paying for it?" I spit.
My fingers tighten, and a strangled gasp escapes him.
Then, "Sasuke..."
I freeze at the sound of her soft voice. I drop Sai, who stumbles and gasps for air, and crouch in front of Sakura. The writing is still inked across her forehead and neck.
A tear slides over her cheek, and one of her eyes opens, finding me. She chokes and gasps for air, and I immediately start worrying. What are those stupid marks doing to her?
"They're not from a jutsu, Sasuke," Sai breaths from beside me.
"Then what the hell are they?" I yell at him, brushing aside Sakura's bangs to get a better look at them.
"Curses, I believe."
"Find help," I say. "NOW!"
He jumps up and starts to run, and I find myself in a panic. I take hold of Sakura's thin hand, and she smiles slightly.
"Sasuke," she mutters again.
"Sakura," I reply. "Stay awake, you here me?"
"Yea."
"Don't die on me," I saw quietly.
She squeezes my fingers slightly. "You came back."
"Yea, I did."
"Why?"
That was the big question. Why did I come back? The answer pops into my head immediately. Because of her.
~Naruto's POV~
I here Sasuke shouting somewhere nearby, and so do our enemies. They have stopped advancing. Suddenly, I can no longer sense Sasuke's chakra, but I can now sense Sai's. Then in a flash, I can't sense Sai's either, and Ryuu leaps up onto the roof in front of us.
"Our business is done gentlemen. Naruto," he turns to me. "It's been nice, hasn't it? I hope you have fun watching the life drain out of Sakura. I know Sasuke will!"
Then they all disappear into thin air, leaving behind a puff jet-black smoke.
