One day after Shield was revealed to the world as Hydra, the Soldiers are on the run together to find somewhere where they will never be found.
Two days after Project Insight was destroyed in fire and chaos, Frost's blue eyes are no longer flat and empty, instead glowing with a proud light.
Three days after Captain America was rescued from the water, the Asset tells the blonde to call him James.
Four days after her world came crashing down around her ears, the Brunette Soldier starts to think she knows what it means to be human.
"You aren't alive just because you're breathing, Anne." MelJo tells her after her parents die. "And you're not living just by surviving. You're alive when you fight for hope. You live when the world knocks you to the ground, but you still have the will to get back up. You're only truly human if you've faced death and fear and pain, and yet you still know how to smile."
The Ghost doesn't think she has the right to claim Anne as her name, even if the memories in her head grow faster and thicker every day she's out of Hydra's grasp. She doesn't even know if she can be a human after being a weapon for half a century. Maybe there isn't anything left in their shattered heads to redeem.
But she remembers Steve, and he remembers her. She finally has her future in her own hands. They've faced death and fear and pain, and she feels the corner of her mouth creeping up in the first slow smile she's had in in seventy years. She leans against Frost, who's got her slim arm around James' waist.
Maybe she can learn to be human again.
And then, when she is human, she'll go back to Steve.
