"Hey Harry wait up!"

"We gotta get there early enough to sign our names."

"We'll have all day for that," I could hear my best friend Nick pant behind me,"The enlistment office will be open all day mate."

"The early bird catches the worm!"

I sprinted down the street until I saw the long line leading out of the enlistment office.

"This is why we should of gotten here earlier." I said to Nick when he caught up to me.

"Harry it's 8:30. I'm normally in bed until 2. 12 at the earliest!"

"I guess sleeping in is more important than protecting your country." I smirked.

"Shit Harry. You always know how to make me feel terrible about anything and everything. It's those curls in tellin' ya." He laughed and messed up my hair.

I smiled at myself because it was true of course.

"Grimshit! Biles! What are you two queers doing here?"

"I think their enlisting Matt."

"Wow this country must be desperate if they're letting your kind in here." Matt sneered.

"You know Matt, I'm starting to think you have a crush on my boy Harry," Nick pat my shoulder. "You know what they say how harassment is a way of flirting."

"What-I-I would never-ugh let's go guys," Matt muttered to his friends. As they walked I heard his say,"As soon as the Germans get a whiff of these two, you know we're screwed, but not as screwed as them." All he friends laughed.

"I'm sorry you have to go through this," I said to Nick.

"Harry I wouldn't trade our friendship for anything." He reassured me.

I did still feel bad. Nick gets a lot of shit for being friends with me. When a rumor spread around that I was gay, all hell broke loose, but he never left my side. I mean the rumors weren't true....I think -I'm pretty sure.

Nick was straight of course, and so ami I, I think. Right now he's dating this girl name Emily and they're perfect for each other.

We are both 18 and we were still in school, but as soon as I had confirmation of my deployment. Same with Nick.

I had always dreamed of enlisting in the war. I mean, the war had just started months ago, but ever since we were young and I had heard about World War, I have always felt the need to defend and protect our country. If that doesn't sound to cliché....

Mum wasn't too happy. I was her only son and she 'didn't want to see her baby boy leave'. After endless hours of persuasion and argument, I finally convinced her to let me leave. I know I was a legal adult and I can do whatever I wanted, but it wouldn't be right to do this without my mums consent.
