(A/N: There's going to be a part in here that's inaccurate to actual WWII timeline, but I like how it fits into my story.)
December 24, 1939
"Thanks again Harry. It's just been so hard since Nick left...."
"I'm glad I could help Ms. Grimshaw." I smiled at my best friends mother as I finished up putting the Christmas lights on her gutters.
It's been almost a month since Nick was deployed and it's been really hard without him.
His older brother Tom was off at University. His little brother Peter was only eight and wasn't old enough to fully understand what was going on and could barely help out.
Their dad, Steve, had injured his back in a work accident so he couldn't lift anything. I've been coming around their house more to help out as much as I could, and so has Emily.
We haven't heard much from Nick. He only sent us one letter.
Dear Mum and Dad,
I know that you bunch are probably worrying about me right now. I'm doing fine. I definitely miss being around, but I've met some people already, and have seen a few familiar faces.
As you may know, the war isn't letting up anytime soon. I haven't been on the field yet but I've definitely seen more than I've ever plan to. It's not like it is over the radio or what we read in the newspaper.
I really miss you guys and Tom and Peter. I hope their not missing me too much. Tell Tom to keep up his studies. He's gonna make a great doctor and tell Peter to stay out of my room. All the shit in their is still mine!
How's Emily? I really miss her here . The only women here are some of the nurses. Tell her that I love her and will be home in no time.
And what about Harry? He'd love it here knowing him. He's crazy ya know., but the good kind. If only he were here.... Don't let him be too disappointed about not being here. Tell him I'm suffering or something. His turn will come soon enough. Tell the lad I miss him!
Love you guys!
Nick
The war had gotten progressively worse. Germany had captured Finland not long after Nick was deployed. The Soviet Union had also been expelled from the League of Nations.
More and more people were leaving around me and I was left here on the sidelines. It was Christmas Eve so I couldn't let that spoil the mood.
"Tell your family Merry Christmas!" Mrs. Grimshaw shouted out to me as I walked back to my house.
"You too!" I waved.
All was going fine today. Honestly this has been the most 'normal' day we've had in a long time.
Recently we've been starting these drills where sirens would go off, if there's been an attack here or about to be. The main thing they're scared about are air raids. Whenever the sirens go off, we rush to shut off our lights off, close the shades, and hide out in the basement until the sirens stop.
