And it's still December 24, 1939

"Niall," the blonde lad said and extended out his hand. I noticed right away that when he spoke, he did not sound British.

"I don't want to sound rude, but I take it you're not from here are you?" I asked.

"Nah mate," he smiled. "Ireland."

"What are you doing here then? I didn't think you guys were involved."

"My dad lives here. Parents are divorced. Mum is back in Ireland though."

"Safer there then here isn't it?" He asked.

"I mean none of us are really safe in the big picture," he sighed,"but before this had started, I was here visiting my father with my older brother Greg."

"Ah," I said. "Any particular reason why you wanted to join."

"Oi Harry. We barely even know each other, and you're asking me all these personal questions."

"Oh-uh," realizing that I was probably pushing him. Guilt immediate rose inside me,"My bad. I'm sorry...."

"Don't be," he laughed. "I'm only messin' with ya. I don't mind talking about it. I wouldn't be here if I didn't want to."

"Enlighten me with your story Niall from Ireland."

"First: My full name is Niall James Horan. I was born in Mullingar, Ireland, but I guess you don't really care about my childhood, so let's talk about why I'm in this very exact train."

"Wonderful," I laughed.

(This is gonna be long so I split it up into paragraphs. Just look for these -> ", to know when he's done talking.)

"You see, my older brother Greg and I are very competitive with each other. If he did something, I had to do it too. We were the best of mates. This will be important later on.

When news that England was joining the war broke out, Greg was intrigued. They were letting the Irish fight with the British. At the time, I thought he was bloody crazy and out of his mind. He had decided that we were going to go visit our dad here.

I hadn't realized his plan until one day he said,'Hey Niall, do you know where dad keeps our birth certificates.'

I told him where they were and I asked him why he needed them. All he said that he was 'applying for a job'.

It wasn't until he left the house, that I connected the dots. I mean, I thought it was weird that out of nowhere, Greg wanted to visit our dad. Those two didn't have the best relationship after our parents divorce. We spent the majority of our life at our mums.

Then I realized Greg doesn't work. Ever.

At that moment, I knew why we were here. Greg wanted to join to military. And me, wanting to be that competitive little brother, decided that I would join too.

Yeah, I know that war isn't a joke, or a game. Before you say anything, I don't lack common sense. I want to do this and I want to be here."
