It’s been a week since that night and things at home are worse than I could have imagined. I have spent more time at the lab than I have at home. James spends more time at home than at the office. My best girl friend, Brenda, asked me if something was wrong and I poured my heart and soul to her. She said I should stop avoiding James and just tell him the whole truth. Then again she said that James might need a little more time.

Ugh, like I said before, unrequited love hurts like a bitch.

I opened the door to the apartment and peeked inside. The house was still. I put my things down on the floor and walked over to the living room and gasped. James was sitting on the couch. It wasn’t that what made me gasp but the way he looked, dead.

“James?” I tapped his shoulder and he jumped a little as his eyes focused on me.

“Derek,” he sat up and looked up at me.

“Are you ok?”

He shook his head, “I haven’t been sleeping well and I really need to talk to you. It’s important.”

Damn it all to hell.

“Alright,” I sat next to him but with some space between us in case he went all macho and wanted to punch me.

“Jackie and I are over for sure.”

Seriously, is this really important?

“Why?”

He took a deep breath and got up to pace in front of me. Damn, he looked good in his wife beater and sweats low on his waist.

“We had another fight after what happened. She wanted me to say I was sorry but I didn’t so she went all wild and started throwing things around in the office. Anyways, she told me that if I enjoyed spending so much time with you and being with you then why was I with her… that’s when things got worse.”

I raised a brow, “Worse?”

“I hesitated so she started crying and hitting me and calling me all these names.” He was still pacing.

“Why did you hesitate, James?” I won’t lie but there was a bit of hope in my heart.

“When she said all that, it was like my eyes had been opened and I finally realized what I had in front of me. I can finally see the truth, Derek. So maybe you weren’t exactly someone who I would normally go for, but it’s like I can actually see a future with you.”

I was stunned.

“I know I’ve always been a bastard and that I don’t really know what I want. But I’ve always been looking for something deep down and you know that. You said that all I needed was that girl to make me settle down and have a family. Jackie wasn’t it and neither are any of the other girls I’ve slept with.” He looked embarrassed at that confession. “Suddenly, I realized in that second that you were under my skin. The thought of being with you doesn’t shock me. It actually feels like the right thing to do.”

My eyes were teary for this is what I wanted for so long, but I knew it was too good to be true. “James, I said you needed a girl. I’m a guy. I can’t give you the family you deserve. I can’t make you go through the humiliation of being seen with me. Plus, this will pass and I don’t want to be broken once again because this time I don’t know if I’ll be able to pick myself up.”
