Days later Adanna still hadn't seen Derek or had an explanation for the issue at hand. She felt bereft. Today 29th July 2014 was her sister's birthday. it was no surprise when her mother was strangely moody. She made sure to avoid her the best she could but it wasn't for long.
Adanna made tea and was drinking when she mistakenly over poured into her mouth that it burnt her tongue and as she spat it out it burnt her hand too and her reflexes kicked in as she dropped the mug on the floor and it shattered making the tea spill over the floor.
She immediately went to the kitchen to get broom to pack the shattered glass from the floor and went back to dispose of it and also get a mop, but before she got back, she found her mum lying on the floor. She had slipped unknown to her that the floor was wet.
"oh my goodness, I am so sorry mum. I didn't know you would come out of your room so soon." she replied as she helped her mum up dropping the mop on the tiled floor.
"in my own house?" Her mum shove her hand away in response and tugged on the shirt Adanna was wearing and dragged them both to a dry area.
Adanna didn't melee only followed her mother's lead as she dragged her along like a sack of rice. She pleaded and apologized.
"shut up." her mum had barked. "you want to finally finish me enhn! you want to kill me. what if I had hit my head, I would have bled out and you would have left me for dead just as you did Condolesa and to make it all worse, you chose her birthday to do such" she alleged poking her index finger on Adanna's face, she said again "you are evil and wicked."
Adanna bowed her head. She was in tears already "I am sorry mum. The cup fell from my hand. I burnt my tongue" she replied brokenly.
"every time lies! when will you stop?" She yapped in anger throwing her phone at Adanna and started to beat and push her against the TV set fixed to the wall.
Adanna groaned, appreciating the distance from where her mother had pushed her to where she stood, she took to her heels screaming "I am tired mami, I can't take this no more. I am leaving"
"oh you had better, you would be a weasel if you didn't."
Adanna entered into her room and locked herself up. She sat and leaned against the wall, her face in between her laps and sobbed for long minutes, thereafter grabbed her phone and dialed Claire to say goodbye. She had reached her limit. she could take it anymore. After the phone rang out, it went straight into voicemail and she left her a message.
She explained to Claire what happened and ended with "I am sorry. I have to leave. I wish I had still carried her. Goodbye Claire" Adanna finished and just as she was about to court the call, Claire picked up angry and concerned "what do you mean by that? leaving for where?"
"I am sorry, I have to. bye"
"hold on, please stop wait. I am coming over now"
"No. don't bother. You won't meet me"
Sighing, Claire said " for how long will this continue; how long will you blame yourself for what happened?".
Adanna continued sobbing.
She pressed on "Leaving isn't the answer, it will only complicate things. You had no choice then. You couldn't have carried her and you didn't kill her"
"Everyone has a choice " Adanna snapped.
Claire was there trying to make her feel better and what she got in return was an outburst of emotion which she understood where from her point of view. Her friend was hurt, near her breaking point and emotionally off balance. Her way of dealing was lashing out
"My mum hates me, the disdain I see on her face daily makes me wish I died in place of Condolesa. In school, everyone looks at me with pity. How can I come back from this?"
All these flying thoughts were running through her head. "Goodbye Claire, you are an amazing friend and I bless and thank God for you."
"Wait, at least tell me where you are going"
"I don't know too" she responded and hung up.
She left the house to find her place. Her hope was fading slowly and that was all she had and the moment She looses it, nothing more is left for her even in this world. She didn't say goodbye to her parents, just a true heart felt note that read: "Mami, I'm sorry I left my sister that day, I was confused and alone. I pray you forgive me but I have to leave to find my place, to forgive myself and to move on. To you daddy, I love you and thank you for always believing in me. Adanna."
She didn't have a plan nether a guide. She was going somewhere, anywhere, She just didn't know where. She carried a small traveling bag along with her and her savings so far. It should see her through more than a month.
She went to her church hoping that it would be a starting point for her. She was disappointed, everywhere was as silent as a grave. She then proceeded to the alter and cried her eyes out until her handkerchief was damp. What was she waiting for, what exactly was she expecting? She didn't know, just some answer, a still voice or a loud one to tell me her it was all going to be okay. Nothing just deep still silence! She rose up angry at the world, wishing to beat it all up and pour out her anguish at it, so the world should share her pain and grief. At most it would have gotten better, definitely better. But there was no one to share this with her, not even her best friend could carry such.
Adanna walked back outside to the gate of her church and knelt down, crying out for help, an assistance of some sort and someone to help share her burden. Nothing. No sign of help, just troubled quietude that roared back at her but amidst all these, she had hope and till now, it has been her only strength.
The night was drawing nearer and nearer and She just kept walking. It reminded her of the dessert safari. This was her own dessert and there was no choice than to wander in it alone.
Then she saw a bus coming her way. She wove it down and not minding what the condiuctor wazs saying about the destination, she hopped in.
Not longer than one hour, the bus stopped abruptly. "everyone come down" The driver shouted.
A passenger beside Adanna jerked her. She had dozed off a little and she awoke to uncertainty and fear. Puzzled, she followed the crowd wandering if staying in the bus was safer than coming down with the crowd. But which will it be? She asked herself as she made a choice.
