CONCEIVED IN DARKNESS

Chapter 27

Mr. and Mrs. Eneanya had just had breakfast when the door bell rang. Mrs. Eneanya cleared the table before going to the door to check who it was at the door. It was a detective dressed in a dark suit. One of the police men who came to investigate the fire at their previous house. She deliberated on how they managed to find their new address.

She shivered at the thought of him being there as her mind probed her 'has something happened to Adanna?, is she in the hospital, was there a body. Oh God no. she quivered at the wrong thoughts with a deep sigh.

"Good morning madam" the detective who later identified himself as John said.

"Good morning Detective. How can I help you? Mrs. Eneanya responded.

"Is your husband around because what I have to say is important and it would be better if you both heard it."

"Yes he is but I hope all is well " Mrs. Eneanya asked as she ushered him in the living room.

Detective John entered and took a quick glance around before taking his seat. Somewhat like an instinct to observe his surrounding.

"Very pleased to meet you again Sir" Detective John said as he stretched his hand toward Mr. Eneanya.

"likewise" Mr. Eneanya responded seating.

"Your house is beautiful "He remarked.

"Thank you Detective. What is it you wanted to discuss with us?"

"Okay straight to business it is" detective John said as he adjusted his seating position to face them both.

"On the night of the accident, we recovered a few items of which included a camcorder and a few tapes but we were only able to retrieve one of those tapes. " He took a deep breath and studied the couple before him as they exchanged looks.

"go on." Mr. Enneanya cheered after a short while of strange silence.

"We extracted the files in it and copied it into a blank disc which is here with me" Detective John said as he reached for the disk in his jacket and passed it on to the husband.

"what is in here?" Mrs. Eneanya asked as she clapped her hands in between her thighs.

"hopefully answers. Please take your time" Detective john said then took his leave but not before saying "I hope this gives you the closure you have always wanted."

"why was nothing about this discovery said earlier? Mr. Eneanya questioned the detective before he left.

"We didn't inform you earlier because we didn't know what was in it and didn't think it would be necessary until we saw the content."

They both stood still for a while saying nothing. Then Mrs. Eneanya spoke up "we don't have to watch it darling. I don't want to know what's in there"

"yes you do darling. same as I" Her husband said as he inserted the disk into the player then took his seat beside her interlocking their hands as the cd started to play.

"I remember the camcorder, I bought it for Lisa during her 10th birthday. She always kept it close." Mrs Eneanya smiled bleakly.


"oh my goodness, that's our baby girl" She covered her mouth with her hands when she saw Condolesa's face. "She feels so real and alive." She told her husband.

" yes" her husband said and gave her hand a gentle squeeze.

Just then the door bell rang again and fear cloaked with anger irritated the air. Mrs. Eneanya heard the knock but ignored it as her eyes were fixed on the TV screen. It took the third ring and a gentle nudge by her husband before she stood to answer the door.

"Pause it" she said to her husband as she walked towards the door.

"Of course" her husband replied resting his back against the couch with deep rapid heartbeats.

"Good morning ma" The stranger at the door said.

"Good morning, how can I help you?" She replied as she tried to place the face.
