Kit carefully settled the lens in place and gently closed the prongs over its edges. With that piece stable, he flipped the tiny device over and finished connecting the last wires. He held up the finished product, eyeing it for any flaws. It was perfect.
"Hey Kit."
He tilted his head in acknowledgement of the greeting, but didn't turn to watch Jornea slipping through the engine room to him. "Hello."
"We're about a day out from Canddes and I'm bored."
Kit shrugged, grabbing a rag to polish the lens a little. "Go irritate Kartk."
"He's avoiding me."
Kit paused, ears flicking back, before his yellow gaze met her dark one in question. "Why?" Jornea just shrugged. Kit turned his attention back to the little device in his paw. "I'll be done with this in a bit and then I'll need you to test out the vest I made for the VR game.
Jornea grinned with some excitement, though it slowly faded again. "Kit? What are you gonna do when Tava gets it into her head to ask the Kitsunes for help?"
"Tell her she needs an invitation to get past the atmosphere and that she won't get one from me."
"She's going to ask questions."
Kit's ears pinned to his skull, agitation creeping into his tone. "She can ask all the questions she likes. I don't have to answer. If she insists on going to Yhan, then I'll just have to jump ship. It'll be a shame to lose Athena, but I'm not going back home. Never." With that, Kit shoved the device into an inner pocket in his vest and ducked under the work table.
He pried a vent cover loose and slid inside, effectively ending the conversation with Jornea. Crawling along vents and creeping through passages, Kit soon found the opening he was looking for. He tugged aside a piece of bulkhead plating and slipped through, dropping down into the doorway between the infirmary and Yggdrasil's quarters.
The green man glanced over his shoulder and smiled as Kit straightened to dust himself off. "Well hello young Kitsune. What brings you?"
Kit padded over to the Doctors desk where he had been working and pulled the device he had just finished out of his pocket. "I finished your commission." Yggdrasil went a pleased lime green as he held out a hand for Kit to drop the device in.
"Excellent! Let's examine it then." He carefully studied it, turning it this way and that under the desk light. "Fantastically delicate work. Almost a creation of art rather than a prosthetic."
Kit just shrugged, using a nearby bookshelf to climb up and sit on the edge of the desk. He extended one claw to direct Yggdrasil's attention. "This bit gave me some trouble. It'll last for a good many years, but I had to sacrifice some clarity. And the telescopic capabilities might not be quite up to par."
Yggdrasil just shook his head, looking pleased. "Humans don't need to see for a mile. This will be quite adequate for our purposes. I appreciate your dedication."
"Doc?"
Yggdrasil and Kit turned to look at the door when Tava called. "In here Captain. You have arrived with spectacular timing."
Tava appeared in the doorway, cocking her head with a smile of question. "What makes you say that?"
Kit waved a paw at the device in Yggdrasil's hand. "Doc's got a present for ya. Don't think you should return this one to sender, even if you don't like it." With that, he slid off the desk and padded out, quite content to let Yggdrasil have all the credit for the prosthetic eye he had requested for a gift for Tava. He had been going on about some way of thanking her for the rescue on Amzon but Kit really couldn't have cared less.
