Can't Stay Away

It was the afternoon after the dinner and Caitlin were in the hotel's gym working off the food from last night. The AC in the gym was broken so she was wearing a sports bra and shorts with some black Nike trainers so she wouldn't overheat. Working hard, on the treadmill she brushed away some sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand. After finishing her ten kilometres on the treadmill she got off and went to grab her water. She was so tired that she walked straight into another body.

"I'm so sorry..." She looked up and then saw who she had walked into. Barry. "Oh hey, fancy seeing you here," she greeted shyly. Here she was standing in front of her "crush" in a sports bra and shorts, really sweaty from her workout. This was embarrassing.

"Yeah, I didn't take you for the athletic type," Barry teased, trying not to stare. He hadn't been able to stop thinking about her ever since they parted the previous night. But all of this morning he had to keep reminding himself of two things: firstly, that she most likely didn't feel the same that he did and secondly, of Matt's threat. Not only could it get himself hurt, it could also get her hurt too. And he wouldn't be able to live with himself if Caitlin was hurt because of his inability to keep is feelings to himself.

"I could say the same to you. Me and Carrie and going to the pool later, she's invited Matt so I thought that you... Maybe... Want to... Maybe tag along," she stammered.

"I'd love too," he accepted, although he was supposed to stay away from her, he really couldn't refuse. Plus, Carrie and Matt were going too so what was the worst that can happen.

An Hour Later

The four of them met at the pool. Flirtatiously, Matt picked Carrie up bridal style and jumped in the water with her in his arms, making her giggle and splashing Barry and Caitlin with a lot of water. They glanced at each other and smiled before running and jumping in the pool at exactly the same time so they were perfectly in sync and gave the couple a taste of their own medicine. Laughing, they emerged from the water. They were quite the pair.

"So when are your parents and the other guests arriving?" Barry asked Caitlin after the four of them had spilt up a bit because Carrie and Matt were making out somewhere.

"Well, it's Monday today so my parents will be here on Thursday afternoon for dinner and obviously for the rehearsal dinner on Friday night. And the rest of the guests should be here on Friday morning," Caitlin replied.

"What are they like?" He asked, coming a little closer to her.

"Well, they like to play favourites with Carrie. They don't seem to accept me. I think they wished I was prettier or something..." She was interrupted.

"No, Cait you're beautiful,"

She smiled and blushed. Normally, she'd hate I been people called her Cait or Caity but she really loved it when he said it. "Well, they just don't get me," she finished, sighing as she finished and looking down at her reflection in the water until she felt her head being lifted up by a warm hand.

"If they can't see how amazing you are then they don't deserve you as their daughter because you're the most amazing person I've ever met," he smiled at her, taking in her beautiful features. He really, really, really liked her and wished that they could be together. If she felt the same of course.

"Well, clearly you haven't met many people," she tried to make a joke. Barry couldn't help but find it adorable how she couldn't take a compliment. And then he realised that he might be feeling for her something that he hadn't felt for a long time, and if he's feeling what he thinks he's feeling then letting her go is going to be harder than he thought. "Thank you, you've been really kind to me," she thanked gratefully and leant in for a hug.

Both of their hearts were beating way too fast and they were struggling to breathe. They had developed such feelings in such a small amount of time but they'd been constantly on each other's minds so much that even though physically they'd been apart, their hearts had latched onto each other and didn't want to let go. And right now the two of them didn't want to let go.

After a couple minutes, they pulled apart, smiling at each other. They could feel themselves falling and they didn't ever want to stop.

Later

In the evening, the four of the went to dinner again but this time at a French restaurant. Just like the night before, the engaged couple couldn't keep their hands off of each other. Barry and Caitlin kept stealing glances at each other every few seconds and sometimes their eyes would meet and they would blush and quickly redirect their eyes towards their menus but every time it happened it would be harder and harder to pull away from each other's grip. The tension between them was growing and it was going to backfire, hard.

Then Carrie's phone rang.

"Hello, yes this is Carrie Snow. Oh my, God, we'll be right there!" Carrie answered her tone sounding worried. Then she hung up. "Babe, we have to go, I'll explain on the way," she took Matt's hand and they left the restaurant in a hurry leaving Barry and Caitlin alone.

Soon the waitress came and they ordered their food.

"So... What about your family, you don't talk much about them?" Caitlin asked when the food came.

"Well, my Mom died when I was young so it's just me and my dad," he replied sadly. Caitlin put her hand on his to comfort him and once again they were gazing into each other's eyes.

"I'm sorry," she murmured, coming slightly closer.

"Me too," he replied, closing more gaps between them. Then Matt's earlier words rang in his head. They had to stop, right now. "Cait, we shouldn't do this... Not here,"

They quickly pulled away and put some distance between them before continuing to eat their food. They didn't talk after that and things became very awkward.

After dinner, they decided to skip dessert. They went outside and were walking in the direction of the hotel when it started to rain. Heavily. Quickly, they bolted towards a bus shelter a few metres away.

There stood awkwardly in silence until: "About what happened..." Caitlin started only to be interrupted.

"We can't be together. Cait, I love you but we can't be together,"

Her eyes widened. He loves her. Was she ready to say it? Screw it, she may never get another chance to say it. It was now or never. "I love you too," she replied. Tears were in their eyes because they wanted this so badly, to be together, but they can't. "Why can't we be together? Why?"

"Because Matt is dangerous. He will hurt you and I can't let that happen. We have to stay away from each other or..." He was interrupted.

"Carrie said the same to me," she paused for a second. "But they aren't here. So why not one kiss, just one," she finished. Slowly, they leant in to kiss each other. Pulling each other closer, the kiss escalated. Mostly, because this was the only one they could ever share. After a short while, they were leaning against the bus shelter, still tangled in their kiss. Every few seconds, one would say "I love you" then the other would reply "I love you too" because they were truly, madly, deeply and irrevocably in love with one another and didn't want this to be the end. But it had to be.

After fifteen minutes, they finally found the will to pull apart but it was so damn hard. They wished things were different. But they weren't. It was physically painful to know that it was the end of their love story. Tears streamed down their faces as they walked away from each other, they stopped themselves from looking back as it would be too painful.

As soon as she was far enough away, Caitlin started to run. Faster and faster until she got back to her room. The tears were streaming as violently as the rain and she cried herself to sleep.

Why did Carrie have to take everything away?
