Gasp

Pepper woke up in a hospital bed. She lifted her head. Pain shot up her neck. She laid it back down.

A nurse walked in and fixed something on a small laptop. She looked over at Pepper.

"Oh, hello. You're awake."

"Um, hi." Pepper said.

The nurse walked over to the bed. She leaned over to look at her vital signs.

"Where am I?" Pepper asked.

"In the hospital." The nurse said. She was a pink and white destiny cat.

"Oh," Pepper said. "Why am I here?"

The nurse pulled out a clipboard.
"Well, you have a severe concussion, and deep wounds in your legs."

Pepper looked down. Her legs had deep wounds were the glass had torn through.

"Does anything hurt?" Asked the nurse.

"Everything." Pepper said quietly.

"Get some rest, it's bad for your concussion to be up and about."

Pepper fell asleep again as the nurse shut off the lights.
----------------------------------------------
Pepper awoke to the sound of footsteps in the dark.

"Hello?" She whispered.

"Hi," said a familiar voice.

"Who are you?" Asked Pepper.

"It's me, Mom."

"Hey."

Pepper flipped over to face her Mom. She could barely see her in the dark.

Mom leaned over and kissed her head. They stayed in silence for awhile.

"I'm sorry, Mom." Pepper finally said.

"It's okay, sweetie. I shouldn't have been so rough on you. I knew you needed a break. You've had a hard time since your father died." She shook her head.

Pepper blinked.

"Well, I'm also sorry for making you have to pay for my hospital bills."

"You're not making anyone pay, I have to to keep you alive."

Pepper nodded.

The nurse came in.

"Sorry, miss, but I need to discuss her medicine bill with you a moment."

"Oh okay." Mom answered.

They walked out, leaving Pepper alone.

It was 15 minutes later when someone else walked in.

"Mom?" Pepper asked.

She was facing opposite the doorway, so she couldn't tell who it was.

"No." A male voice answered. "I'm Derek."

"Who's Derek?" Pepper was confused.

I don't know any Dereks.

"Well, I'm one of the male nurses here. I'm just coming in to check on you, I'm filling in for your other nurse."

"Oh."

"I will be working with you and Ava."

"Who's Ava?"

"My sister."

"How long will I be here?"

"A month. No longer."

"Okay."

She flipped over to see him. He was a black, yellow, and white terrier. He was tall and slightly thin, but muscular nonetheless.

"Ava will be in in a minute."

Pepper nodded. She closed her eyes real quick to try to avoid the light coming from the hallway.

Ava walked in. She was a shorthair cat with cream fur, green eyes, and reddish-cream leopard rosettes on her forehead.

"Hi." Pepper said weakly.

"Oh, hello." Said Ava. "You must be our new patient, Pepper."

Pepper nodded.

Ava checked her vital signs.

"Where's the clipboard?" She asked.

Derek pointed to where the laptop was.

Ava wrote something down then started asking Pepper questions.

"How much does it hurt?"

"A lot."

"Do your cuts ever bleed?"

"Sometimes."

"Have they clotted yet?"

"No."

Ava asked more questions as Derek typed them down on the laptop.

Pepper got tired of the questions and closed her eyes.

"Maybe we should leave her." Derek said, noticing She was tired.

"Okay."

Ava and Derek left the room. Someone else entered.

"Hello?" Pepper asked.

There was no answer.

Pepper opened her eyes.

It was Justin.

Pepper closed her eyes again and growled. Pain shot through her as she did.

"Don't do that." He whispered. "I've had a concussion before, it hurts to growl."

Pepper stopped. "How did you know what happened to me?"

"The teacher told us after he got off the phone with your Mom. He told us to make you get-well cards. I'm delivering them." He handed her the small stack of cards.

She flipped through them. Most of them were sloppy, and meant nothing. Pepper didn't care. She was one of the most unpopular pets in the school. If those pets made cards for Justin, they'd be the best written cards ever.

Pepper finally came to the last card. It said:

Get well Pepper. I'm also sorry for what I said. I hope your head and cuts heal soon. It's boring here without you.
-Justin

It was the most well written card of them all.

Pepper held out her paw to Justin. He held it.

They both closed there eyes, and sighed.
