The minute school ended I felt incredibly light. Then the image of my parents crossed my mind and all I wanted to do is drown myself in tears. Since my parents are kind of, well yeah, you'll understand in quite a few bits, alright?

Anyway. I was still a tad bit angry, but it had subsided into indifference and I let it cloth me since I hated being angry. And the little mystery about this dinner Jay mentioned, yeah, it was nagging my butt, I can tell you that. Since Jay lost his cool when telling, it had to be a pretty big deal. But I let it go. Can't control anything that isn't even at my range of reach, so why worry.

I grabbed the door handle and opened it, knowing that everyone was already inside. They all got home before me on mondays. I got see a pretty homey scene. My little sister and brother playing a card game, mom cooking and dad reading a report of some sort. I greeted everyone as I went inside my room to change into comfortable clothes. Which meant a tee shirt and baggy pants.

I know, I have no shame.

I went back into our small apartment. The kitchen and living-room was in the same space so mom's cooking deafened the TV, though no one was watching.

We just liked to have it on.

"That smells nice," I massaged my mother's shoulder as she fry panned five slices of fish. "I can't wait to eat it."

If you hadn't noticed, I was trying to smooth talk her into good mood. You know, before I totally wrecked her day. Mom scoffed, but I could easily hear delight in her voice. So far so good.

I went back to my siblings and my brother, Alexander, gave me a quite sharp look of suspicion.

"What?" I asked as I slumped down on the sofa. Alex raised a brow.

"Why are you being nice to mom?"

"Since I'm her fucking daughter, that's why." I clamped my mouth shot as Penelope looked up.

She was barely six, I didn't want her to start cussing. Alex sighed at that and shuffled the cards in a very experienced way. Since he was a bartender on most nights anyway, so he was good with his hands.

"Whatever you did, wait until dinner's over." Alex smiled. "I'd like to have time to escape."

I grimaced at his stupidness and grabbed the remote. I wasn't even going to defend myself. The stupid was right. I was going to wait until after the dinner.

"Get your asses here and eat!" My mother shouted in Spanish and we all scurried to our seats. Mom placed four plates already filled with delicious fish, and then a chicken spaghetti for dad.

After the dinner, which was pretty much no conversation only eating, Alexander excused himself. But not until he gave me a knowing grin. Penny went to her room to play doll and I was left with the washing.

As I was collecting the empty plates, dad asked how school was.

Here goes...

"Well," I looked at him. Mom was in the background, telling Penny something. But she was in earshot.

"I got five detentions and it starts tomorrow, hey, would you like some chocolate fudge?"

Dad didn't miss a heartbeat of what I said. And so apparently my mom did neither. She turned slowly where she stood, closing the bedroom door of Penny's.

"Did I hear detention?" Mama Vieña came closer.

"More like five of them," Dad added.

"Avery Mello Noria," my mother used my full name. And mind you, 'Mello' is pronounced like 'Mejjo," J pronounced as 'Y' in 'Yay'. I just hate it when the teacher says Mello as in the English word mellow since I'm not fucking soft, okay?
