You twiddled your blonde hair as you sat in your usual seat in the middle row of your class. You placed your book and pens on the table only to have them immediately whipped off the table by Sadie, the school “Queen Bee”. As her and her posse swept past you laughing you sighed, bending to pick the books up.

"It’s alright I’ve got it," someone said from the floor, already lifting the books onto your desk.

The new boy Ashton’s face soon popped in front of you. You flinched backwards in your chair as he was known for being rough and violent when he wanted to be. He placed the books on your desk and smiled before heading to a seat right at the back.

The lesson went in usual fashion. Teacher asked a question, no one replied and so he turned to you for answers. You could hear sneers and whispered hateful remarks from Sadie and her friends from the back of the class every time you got a question right but you’d learnt over the many years to completely block them out. The lesson ended with a shrill ringing of the bell and the sound of scraping chairs filled the room as everyone immediately wanted to vacate the classroom. As you were leaving you bumped into the Ashton kid again.

"Hey you’re pretty smart aren’t you?" he said as you both pushed through the door.

You gave a him a small smile in return as a thank you but you were desperate to get to the library and away from all the crowded hallways. Being small didn’t help you navigate too well in the sea of people.

"SMART?!? More like a up her self little weirdo!"

Sadie’s calls and taunts rang through the corridor. Everyone stopped moving and turned to face her, sensing that something seriously entertaining was about to occur, undoubtedly a fight.

"Do you enjoy being such a freak?" she said coldly as she stalked towards you, her group of clones of herself surrounding you.

You froze to the spot, hoping she would just do the usual of humiliating you and then leave you alone. Not this time. She slapped you smartly round the face and then grabbed your hair, pulling your ear close towards her mouth. As you gasped with pain and the shock of the attack, she breathed a word of warning into your ear.

"Don’t get your hopes up about Ashton. Do you really believe he’d like someone like you? Come back from fairy land to reality. For in the real world, I win. I win now, and I’ll win later. Just remember that when me and Ashton are together ok?"

She gave you one final push, forcing you to the ground. As the crowd erupted into laughter you looked around for anyone to help you. Your gaze landed on Ashton, who was pushing his way through the crowd and he looked mad. really mad.

"WHAT ARE YOU DOING!?!?!" he bellowed, causing the gathered crowd to silence. It still amazed you that not one teacher had appeared to see what the commotion was all about.

"How dare you treat her like that!" Ashton said, his voice barely above a whisper, towering menacingly over Sadie.

She was completely silenced, cowering in fear.

"That’s what I thought," he replied to her silence. "Now next time you go to bully Y/N or anybody else just because they don’t fit your ideals of perfect then remember this moment. Because nobodies perfect, but the closest you can get is by having a good heart. And Sadie…" he said leaning into her ear, "You’re the furthest away from perfect out of all the people I’ve ever met."

The corridor was completely silent. Then, one person began clapping and soon the whole crowd was cheering and clapping. Sadie stared at everyone cheering her downfall before storming off, her friends quickly following suit.

Ashton helped you to your feet as the crowd dispersed checking that you were ok.

"So where to?" he asked, offering you his arm.

You smiled and slipped your arm through his, leading him not into the library, but out onto the playing fields. For once, thanks to Ashton, you finally felt like you were not just a shy dork, but You. Intelligent, brave and the nearest to perfect you could ever find.
