Chapter One
"I volunteer as tribute!" I never thought those four words would change my life so quickly. People think coming from One is easy, but it can be hard sometimes. Like today, I had to volunteer all because my teacher told me to. Because I was one of the top fighters in my classes at the training centre. He said "Marvel, you could win this thing. If you just put your mind to it". My mind to what. Killing innocent people! I don't tell anyone my thoughts, I would get my tongue cut off if I did.
On the train to the Capitol I look at my fellow tribute 'Glimmer'. Her blond hair reflects off the rays of sunshine coming from the window. "Have you ever met them?" She asks, taking me out of my daydream. "Who Cashmere and Gloss? No." I stare out of the window and then our escort from the Capitol walks in. "Marvel, Glimmer. Could you make your way to the tv room? We're going to watch the recap of the reapings"
As we walk through to the the next section of the train, our escort tries to make small talk but only Glimmer replies. When we enter we find Cashmere and Gloss waiting on us to turn the television on. "I think there's an interesting group of tributes this year" Gloss says as he picks up the remote and presses the on button.
None of the reapings really stood out, except the girl from four. She has blue eyes and brown hair, and her name is Ariel Waters. Kinda of an ironic name, you know coming from the fishing district. But she is slim -but not stick and bones-, I could tell she done some sort of swimming because I could see the muscles in her arms and legs.
I blank out for the rest of the night, thinking of what the next day will encounter. I drift asleep in my room and I am awoken by my escort saying "Wake up Marvel, we have a big day ahead of us. We have just arrived in the Capitol". I rubbed my eyes and stretched my arms out. I quickly remember that I am not in One anymore.
It takes me a few minutes before I decide to get up. I stand up, and since I have no other clothes available on the train: I put my reaping outfit back on. I make my way to the dining cabin, I see Gloss, Cashmere and Glimmer sitting talking about different strategies on how to find water or find a shelter. I sit down and Cashmere looks at me "About time Marvel," she said with a smile and shook my arm slightly. I look out the window to see the phenomenon that is the Capitol. I stand up just as we approach a tunnel, by the time we see the sunlight again we have arrived at our stop. Different Capitol citizens cheering and chanting my name. I wave at the unusually dressed people.
*Ariel's pov*
I stand there in my grey skirt and blue blouse. Terrified. I don't know why though, my mom and dad died in a fishing accident, there ship sank. I live in an orphanage, although I do get regular visits from Annie Cresta. One of our previous victors, our parents used to work together so I guess she felt the need to comfort me and we soon became good friends. She taught me how to weave a fishing net and sometimes she would tell me about the games. And she told me it's also a long shot that I'd be picked, since I don't need to take out tesserae. "You're names only in there four times, there not going to pick you" I imagine Annie saying in my head.
I stand in front of our Justice Building. Annie and Finnick -our two most recent victors- stand in front of it on the pop up stage that only comes out on reaping day and the victors tour. "Welcome, welcome" our escort says and I blank out for the rest of the speech as we hear it every year. "And now for the girls" she says and Annie stares at me and I do it back. I can tell by her facial expressions that she wants me to stop worrying, as I am quite easy to read. Our escort picks up a piece of paper and walks over to the expensive microphone. She opens the folded card and clears her throat.
"Ariel Waters"
One of the girls standing next to me taps my side and whispers to me "Good Luck" and I look at Annie's face almost in tears but she's trying to hide it. I step out from all the girls my age and onto the cleared path. I feel two peacekeepers walk behind me. "Well come here dear" the escort says as I walk up the steps. Having a closer look at Annie her eyes watering. I guess we have grown quite a good friendship over the years, almost like sisters.
Our escort then picks a boy, twelve years old. No one volunteers.
We go into the justice building and Annie comes rushing in with Finnick to see me. She hugs me and neither of us let go. "I'm fine" I say and she doesn't reply. She then lets go and Finnick hugs me. I had met him a few times, sometimes he would come and visit me with Annie or he would take me out and teach me to swim. "We're sorry this happened to you" Annie says and I look at her confused. "What do you mean? It's not your fault" I say and Finnick and Annie share a look. "Yes, it is" Finnick says. "President Snow, he knows that we love you and it's a way to punish us." Annie finally says. "Is that true?" I look to Finnick when I say this, he doesn't reply. "I said, is that true?" I start to get angry, but I just start to cry. I feel a strong pair of arms wrap around my body. A very familiar pair of arms. Finnick. "Sometimes I wished I never won those games" I hear him say and he kisses the top of my head
