*beep beep* *beep beep*  Ugh.  I roll out of bed and sluggishly walk to my closet to change my clothes.  For some reason I feel like this isn’t going to be a normal day….  I brushed my teeth, brushed my hair, and ate a small breakfast.  I look at the clock and see that I had extra time so I decided to walk to school.  I could use the exercise, I guess.  It also would give me time to be alone and think.  It’s better than being harassed another day.  So, I went on my way.
...
I walk to school alone to my thoughts.  I’m so lost in my thoughts that I barely notice someone talking to me.
“Where are you going?”
Huh?  There’s a boy about my age standing in front of me.  I’m caught off guard so I look up at him.  He smirks.  Oh no...am I staring at him?!  I think he knows I’m flustered because he lets out a little laugh.
“Hello?”  He tries again, still smiling.
“S-sorry…”
His expression turns soft and his head tilts to the side a bit.  “For what?”
“Um...for being awkward.  I was lost in my thoughts and I just got a bit caught off guard when you starting talking to me.”
“Oh.  Sorry.  Did I scare you?  I didn’t mean to...I’m sorry,”  He looks slightly ashamed of himself.
“N-no!  I just didn’t see you!  It’s totally fine!”  I blushed, feeling bad that he was upset.
“Oh...okay!”  He grinned sweetly.  “So...where are you going?”
“Um...I was on my way to school.”
“Oh…”
Why does he seem so sad?
“Oh!  I can’t believe I forgot to ask you your name!  Where are my manners?  I’m Nathan!  What’s your name?”
I stutter a little.  No one ever asks my name, let alone talks to me.  “A-April...April Anderson.”
“Oh!”  He looks kind of excited.  “I like that name.  It’s really nice!”  He blushes slightly.
With wide eyes I say, “Thanks…”  It feels weird to get a compliment again.  It’s been a while.  “By the way, why did you seem so sad when I said I was going to school?”
“Oh...I wanted someone to hang out with.  I’m homeschooled so I don’t have friends.”  His eyes get a little watery.
I panic a little.  “How about we hang out after school?”
He cheers up.  “Okay!”
He thinks for a second.  “Is it okay that I’m asking you to hang out?  Like, you don’t know me yet.  Am I making you uncomfortable?  I’m sorry….”
I blush vibrantly.  “N-no!  It’s fine!  You...you seem really nice.  How about we meet by that tree at about 3:15?”
He lights up again.  “Okay!  Have fun at school!  See you later!”
“Bye.”  I say.  I won’t, but he has good intentions so I won’t say that to him.
As I walk away I hear him getting all excited to himself.
“I can’t believe I finally have someone to talk to!”
I smile bittersweetly.  Maybe it won’t be so bad to have a new friend.
