Morgana walked down the steps of the castle. It was a warm sunny day, and she was glad to feel the heat on her skin after the long, cold winter. Her servant, Gwen, followed closely behind her.
'Where are we going my lady?' Gwen asked.
'For a ride' said her mistress. 'I havent been for such a long time, and its such a beautiful day."
Gwen looked slightly worried at the thought of a ride.
Morgana turned around and looked at her.
'You are coming aren't you?'
'Of course my lady, but i cant ride that well, i will slow you down.'
Morgana could see in Gwens face that she was being serious.
'Dont be silly,' she said, 'we have all day.'
Gwen smiled at her mistress. Despite their positions they were great friends and Gwen couldnt wait to spend the day together.
'Oh and i havent got a horse' Gwen said....
'I'll sort that out' Morgana said, walking of leaving Gwen unsure of what to do.
Morgana came back a few minutes later, leading her own horse and another. Morganas horse was white as snow and was a present from her guardian, the King.
The other horse was grey with white spots down her back.
'My lady I couldn't possibly use this horse. It is property of the king and i am just a servant.'
'Nonesense,' replied Morgana 'I ask the guard for two horses. Mine and one for my maid. How else are you supposed to come?'
Gwen didn't have an answer so she helped her friend put the saddle on her horse, and then did the same for hers.
'Are you sure?' She asked Morgana before climbing on.
'Yes of course.' Morgana answered and clambered onto her own horse. Together the two of them rode out of Camelot.
They went at a gentle trot at first, just to make sure Gwen was completely confident. But she was fine and soon they were galloping along the countryside.
'Where are we going?' Called Gwen
'Haven't the foggiest!' Morgana replied.
After a while they came to a little stream running through the forest. There were islands in the middle and it was very easy to scramble across some rocks to get to them. Having tided their horses to a nearby tree, the girls crossed the stream and sat down.
'Its beautiful here' Gwen said. 'How did you find it?'
'I came here with my mother once.' Morgana replied.
'Oh I'm sorry.' Gwen felt awful for bringing the subject up.
'Don't be silly. The past is the past. We cant change it. Anyway, the only memories i have here are happy ones.'
Morgana smiled and looked across at Gwen... their eyes met. Morgana looked at her maid. Her brown eyes were staring back into her blue ones.
Neither of them knew how it happend. But suddenly their lips were touching.
They pulled away. It was not the right thing todo the thought. But it had felt so good... so they leaned in, and kissed again.
It was some time before Morgana and Gwen could escape the palace together again. When they did it was the day before May-Day, which, they decided was the perfect day for a ride. Soon the were racing through the trees. Gwen lead the way, Morgana said it was her time to chose where to go. Gwen had sonewhere very special in mind. After a while, they arrived at a cave.
"A cave?" Morgana said slightly confused.
"Oh, my brother and i used to come here. Trust me, its better inside.
Tying the horses to a tree, Gwen lead Morgana in to the cave. Inside were the remain of old fires, carvings on walls, sticks and stones scattered on the floor. The clear eemains of a sercret life away from prying eyes. Morgana felt a a sense of wrongness. She shouldnt be here. This was Gwens special place.
"Come on." Gwen called back to Morgana.
Morgana follwed her servant through the damp passage way. A few minutes later they came to a clearing. The cave opened up and a little stream ean next to the cave and now plummeted into the lake below. Morgana stood speechless. "I knew you'd like it." Gwen said.
"Its beautiful." Morgana exclaimed.
She stared out across the lake. She had never seen anything so tranquil. It seemed to... it seemed to perfect for this world.
Gwen and Morgana sat down, their legs dangling above the lake. "How did you find this place?" Morgana asked breaking the silence. "I didn't. My brother did, he was always out exploring places. One day he came across it. We always came here together and... i dont know. Just sat here. Enjoyed the scenery. It was like a secret place we could go to hide when we needed. It was great." Morgana looked over at Gwen. They leaned in. Their lips met, and sparks flew. It was a different type of magic. And it felt so good.

Over weeks and months that followed, Morgana and Gwen became quite close. They became as lovers do, because, thats what they were. In the years that follwed, when Morgana's heart turned cold as stone, Gwen saved her. Gwen showed her the light. Because, as she said, thats what you do when you love someone.
