ON MY SECOND DAY, I BARELY GET MY FOOT THROUGH THE DOOR BEFORE I'M STOPPED BY AN ADMINISTRATOR FOR WEARING SHORTS THAT STOP ABOVE MY FINGERTIPS. I want to argue my case that they aren't really that short, and the only issue is that my arms are longer to compensate for my taller stature, but instead, I pocket the demerit he gives me and walk to first period.

"There she is." Miles greets me as I enter and throw my bag on my desk.

"And she has detention." I deadpan, taking my seat next to Cassidy.

Cassidy makes a face. "Uh oh, what'd you do? School's only been in session for five minutes."

"Apparently my shorts live up to their namesake." I say with a sigh.

From the corner of my eye, I can see Miles checking me out. "Yes... they... do."

Cassidy makes a face at him. "Gross, Miles. Don't be a perv." He laughs at this. "It's not funny."

"I don't care. Unfortunately, I'm conditioned to asshat boys objectifying the female body." I say in a condescending tone, directed at Miles.

He holds his hands up. "Sorry, I'm a pig, I know. Forgive me."

I roll my eyes, and Cassidy leans over to my desk. "You guys up for a party tonight?"

"It's a school night." Miles says in a tone that makes it almost sound like a question.

"When has that ever stopped us?" Cassidy responds. "Besides, your ass is coming whether you want to or not. You ditched me on the last two parties we were supposed to go to, so you owe me."

The corner of his mouth twitches, then he turns to look at me. "Jersey girl, you coming?"

"Where's it going to be?" I ask.

"Somewhere in the Bronx." Cassidy answers. "The invitation was all over Twitter and Instagram."

"We can catch the subway." Miles says. "Maybe get some food afterwards."

"Nick's?" Cassidy suggests.

I stay quiet while they discuss food options, mostly because even though I've been here for a few weeks, I was still getting used to the new location. It seemed like for one thing I learned, there was always ten more things to know about New York. It never ended.

"You're going to love Nick's." Cassidy says, nodding with approval. "They make some of the best pizza."

Miles looks to me and shakes his head. "Don't listen to her, it's alright, but Ray's is top notch."

"You're only saying Ray's is the best because you're following the hype train." Cassidy dismisses him.

"No, I'm saying it's the best because it is. Besides, you only —"

"Miles and Cassidy," The teacher, whose name I learned yesterday is Ms. Valencia, interrupts their conversation which causes them to stop talking. "Care to share your conversation with the class?"
