I must've misheard him. Vampires? Yeah, right. Pffffft!
"You're kidding right?" I asked with a nervous laugh. Master raised an eyebrow, "do I look like I'm kidding?" he replied in his serious tone.

"But.. Vampires don't even exist!"

"Who told you that?"

"I just know! We all know they don't exist! Ask anyone!" I replied, completely exasperated.

Master chuckled. Okay, either I'm really funny or Master is high on something. I made him chuckle twice in past half an hour!

"What you've heard is wrong, my child. Vampires do exist. But this information should not be given to anyone else. It has to be kept a secret."

"But you just told me. How's it a secret anymore?"

"I told you because you deserve to know. You've been selected for the Hidden Parallel after all.

Oh, yes, I'd forgotten about that.

"Okay, I get it. So what now? How exactly do I do this job?"

"It won't be easy. You'll need a lot of training and courage. You have to hunt them to maintain a balance between humans and supernatural beings."

"So how many vampires do I need to hunt for maintaining the balance?"

"Depends. The stronger they are, the lesser you'll have to hunt. An old, powerful vampire is equal to about a thousand humans. And since the population of vampires is scanty, it'll be enough to kill a powerful vampire in a month."

"How many humans equal a weak vampire?"

"About 500. You'll have to hunt two such vampires in a month."

Sigh.

"What do I tell my friends? What if they ask me about my placement?"

"Don't worry, we've got that covered for you."

Okay, so this was all planned beforehand. And I had no idea. Great.

"Sooo.. When do I start?"

"In a week. But first.."

"First what?"

"You'll need a partner."

"Partner? I thought we couldn't involve any other students or workers?"

"I'm aware. We won't be involving them."

"I don't understand!"

"Your partner is going to be a human."
