xii; everything i do

"i felt her absence. it was like waking up one day with no teeth in your mouth. you wouldn't need to run to the mirror to know they were gone"
James Dashner, The Scorch Trials

"Do you even see how much I need you?" Dan yelled, voice rising in pitch, tears building up in his brown eyes. "I need you, you can't die!" He took a step forward, two, until he could move his arm enough to get an angle to punch his boyfriend. Except Phil stopped his fist mid-punch, holding it gently in his leather-covered hand, eyebrows pulling together slightly, lips tipping downwards.

"Dan," he whispered, and he moved a hand up to cup his cheek after he'd let his fist drop, "I'm not being unsafe, we both agreed this was a good idea, going back on the streets like this." He moved one hand to rub his arm, a gesture meant to be calming. "I'm going to be with you until that sun stops burning outside, until the moon disappears forever, until the day where we both don't exist on the same plane, and when that happens, I'll do my damned best to get back to you."

Dan reached to grab one of his arms, squeezing as the tears spilled down over his cheeks. "I don't know if I can handle this." His voice was quieter than he'd last spoken, "I don't know if I can handle the thought of you not coming back one day."

Leaning forward to press a kiss to his cheek, his boyfriend said, "You don't have to. I will always be here for you."

Dan gave a little choked off laugh. "Where'd you learn your romantics?" he asked, and tilted his head up to look at Phil, who only looked away, pursing his lips. "Phil?"

"Mikey the mathlete." Phil blurted out, looking down at Dan, "My swooning skills come from Mikey the Mathlete, he screwed Benji's cousin when we were in high school. He was terrible, I hate him, I think he's rich now."  He looked away from Dan, shaking his head. Benji's name made him hurt a little, because some part of him missed his best friend so badly, that he just wanted to cry, because he'd had him around since high school, they'd shared a dorm room in university, and then...

Then, after so long, Benji had moved out.

He'd moved out to be with a guy he'd just met, and when Phil thought about it harder, it made his chest churn, anger shake through his body.

A knock sounded on the door, and standing there was Joey, a boy next to him with white-purple hair, looking around curiously. "This is... Daniel." Joey said quietly, eyes a little wide as he looked to both of them, "I just wanted to tell you guys I had a friend over." His voice was meek, and he reached for his friend's hand, grasping it in his own to pull him from the room.

Dan watched after him, frowning slightly. "Don't tell me I don't know any straight people." He muttered, and Phil blinked, looking over at him.

"I feel like a dad," he admitted, "That situation's got me feeling a little defensive."
