Always slightly clever

You thought you heard the scurrying of paws. Perhaps it was a trick of sound?

This was no trick, you turned your neck around and saw a small creature crawling away from the bench from where you sat. The creature itself wasn't too large in size, it had a gray scale like features all around except around its eyes, mouth, and paws. It also had some sort of bill, like on a platypus.

It seemed to be scurrying off with a shiny object in its tiny, orange  claws.

It made you curious, curious enough to make you forget that if you went the other direction now, you would never make it in time for your train.

You didn't think twice but began to subconsciously get up.

You had decided to follow it, it was based on a gut feeling really. But hey, gut feeling is better than no feeling at all.

You were sprinting to catch up to the creature. Mud splashed onto your shoes, the wind blew onto your face. You weren't sure why you were running so fast, or why you followed it.

Everything you had done so far was just a pure impulse, had no thought gone into any of your choices?

You stopped to take a breath, you could see the creature looking into a shop window so you took it to your advantage. Your breath was foggy in the winter air, you were no longer cold. Just running a block or two brought back feeling into your cold toes, numbed by the winter air.

You looked up and realized the animal had disappeared. You had a sinking feeling in your stomach. You had let it get, away, didn't you?

Everything you did seemed pointless now, why couldn't you have just stayed in that broom cupboard, or in that sleep, that pure state of no memory, no problems.

No worries, no problems to be solved. A world where everything was fair, a dream world. Your head hung low, it had to be at least what, 9:00 now? Ridiculous, you had wasted your train ride, the only thing you had left, on pure impulse. You could never run from whatever was going to get you.

With a disappointed scowl across your face, you started to walk forward, back to Tina's apartment.

You stopped only for a moment to catch a glimpse inside of the shop window that the animal had seemed so taken too and inside stood, many, many, expensive diamond, gold, and silver necklaces, earrings, and watches.

However, on one of the pedestals stood the creature, in a ballet stance of some sort holding at least five necklaces across its body. You raised a brow and tightened your lips together. You didn't know what to do. You could surely get arrested for trying to trespass in a well, you know a jewelry store.

You were in a staring contest with the animal, giving it a "are you kidding?" look.

You reached for a rock off the pavement to break the glass, but a loud voice behind you made you pause, drop the rock and turn  around.
