Chapter 5

Katie's POV

"Going once!"

"Going twice!"

"Sold! To the fine and handsome Mr. Fortunato!"

.. confused? Yeah, let me rewind.

*Before the auction*

Fabiano didn't have time to reply when she asked him to dance and dragged him away.

Well I can see why he said sorry for tonight.

But I wasn't one to be humiliated so I was getting out of here.

However, Vincenzo caught my hand in time and smiled at me.

My heart melted.

God, he was gorgeous.

"Would you like to dance?"

I didn't let time pass when I responded.

"Yes"

He walked us to the dance floor and wrapped his arms around my waist while I placed mine around his neck.

We swayed for a couple of songs before an announcement was made.

"Everyone, take a seat and prepare for the auction!"

Auction...?

Dear me, there was going to be an auction tonight and he didn't bother to tell me! I wonder where the money will go to...

People scattered to find their seats and I stood waiting for someone to give me directions since I had absolutely no idea where to sit.

Vincenzo had disappeared in the crowd and due to my loneliness, I moved to the side and stood waiting to find the infamous Fabiano Fortunato. And find him I did as he strolled casually over to me with such ease and grace. I could murder him for being so elegant yet rogue.

Time told no lies as he whisked my arm and sat us at one of the front row tables. However as we made our way, another woman had stopped us and asked Fabiano for a moment. I was left standing once again alone and this time with more hunger than ever. So I did what any reasonable girl would do. I made my way over to the food station where there was cheese, ham and crackers. To be quite honest I never understood how these events were filled with the filthy rich that decided they didn't want to spend money so instead are lunchables. I may have completely over analyzed the situation but decided not to dwell and started munching on the food.

Suddenly a hand grabbed me by the arm and started dragging me and I was trying to chew my food down fast. I was being shoved backstage and had no time to tell the man I had no part in whatever was about to go down.

"Sir I-"

"Not now, we have 2 minutes to get all the girls lined up and we almost lost you, oh dear me I sure hope Mr. Denacio is pleased with this years selections." With that he mumbled to himself walking off to the front of the stage. The security or what I presumed was so was standing straight away making sure no one stepped out of line or made a run for it. I had no clue what was going on but I knew I had no part in this.

Lights were turned on and I could faintly hear the man speaking on the microphone who was with me a few moments ago.

"Ladies and Gentleman, welcome and thank you for attending our annual Gala hosted by none other than Mr. Maximo Denacio" there was a round of applause after the name and I tuned him out while tapping the big dude next to me.

"Hey I don't think this is right-" he cut me off while glaring at me from his 6'5 stance.

"Little girl, of course none of this is right but we're here to get paid not ask questions so just wait your turn and get your pay for the day." Huh?

"No I mean I think you have me mistak-"

And with that I was pulled away and shoved on stage next to the girl who was previously in front of me. All girls were wearing dresses that looked very provocative. The guy with the microphone started again and his words made my mouth drop.

"Lady #1 is from New Hampshire, 22 years of age and  her name is Dani! Do I hear 30?" As he says this he puts a hand to his ear and grins widely as someone from the crowd says,"40!"

30? 40? What?

Someone else pipes up,"60!"

"66!"

"75!"

"Oh now we're talking! 75, 75! Going once! Going twice! Sold! To the handsome gentleman in the brown coat!" The girl Dani gave a flirtatious smile and I tilted my head to the side. Did she want to... be sold? What?

I wanna know what the hell is going on.

I looked around the crowd not listening to anything that was going on when I saw him.

The infamous Fabiano, sitting in his chair with some girl next to him. However he looked to be deep in thought, glancing at all the tables as if he was lookin- oh my god. He's looking for me! How the heck do I get his attention?

"Alright sold to Mr. Grande!"

"Next we have our lovely Katarina! Born and raise in upstate New York, only 20 years old eh? Let's start it off at 50!" Men wasted no time spitting out numbers to which I gagged.

"60!"

"80!"

"85!"

"90"

"100"

Woah woah, 100 dollars?!?! Yikes!

"Do I hear 105?" Silence and then he starts.

"100, 100, going on-"

"200." With that my eyes snapped to where I heard the familiar voice of the name I've said way too many times in the last few hours. Fabiano.

Everyone gasped and I presumed that 200 dollars was a lot.

The girl next to me scoffed and glared at me.

"Why the hell would Mr. Fortunato pay 200,000 for you?" My eyes widened and I mentally freaked out wait what!!!!???

And then I heard it again, another familiar voice.

"300." Vincenzo?

Fabiano turned and glared at him, his eyes turning into slits before raising him.

"400!"

There was silence before the MC started.

"Alright 400! Going once, going -"

"500" and I face palmed. This was starting to get really-

"1 million dollars."

And with that everyone kept stealthy quietness.

The MC began.

"1 million."

*Presently*

"Going once!"

"Going twice!"

"Sold! To the fine and handsome Mr. Fortunato!"

And while the rest of the girls were being sold I couldn't help but feel watched as his eyes never left me.

This was possibly one of the longest nights of my life.
