Year Five takes us into the fifth series of short stories chronicling the adventures of the Jellicle Cats. The Tribe witnessed the entry of two adults - Tailkinker and Silvana, who eventually sought Mates with Brutus and Tugger respectfully. Alcestis bears a miracle kitten, named Celestine, with the help of the Healers and magic users. Jellylorum bears twins, Althea (who will be a Healer) and Jonathan. And Cassandra bears Leona, who possesses her telepathy even before birth! Almost everyone has paired, including the young adults of Tumblebrutus with Electra, Asparagus with Cettie and Pouncival with Jemmina. Alonzo and Exotica pair, and Shadowdancer and Sundancer pair. Tragedy strikes the Tribe when Quaxo brings in a stray named Littlepurr. The female Jellicle is dying, and Demeter befriends her before she goes. Silvana finds a kitten named Misty, who is dying of Feline Leukemia. When things looks bleak, Nightchaser announces that it’s not going to get easier. The Staff of Sekhmet (Cassandra’s Staff from Ancient Egypt) has been found and is headed to Macavity. With the skill of Mungojerrie and some discovered skills of Silvana, the Staff is saved. Macavity attempts to take over as Leader of the Tribe, using a glove to harness the Aegis of Bastet, but this attempt fails. Shadowdancer falls ill, and is rescued by the Dark Family and Sundancer. Finally, a fire starts in the Yard, and many Jellicles rediscover their priorities.
Year Five allows Anna-Karin Larsson, normally the Chronicles’ Illustrator, to become the primary Author of The December chapter: “Snowflake Tears.” Her previous entries were outlines and brief story touches, but this entry was over half the actual chapter. So, this is a special treat.
Also entering into the picture is the ominous presence of an unseen watcher by the name of Stealth. This character comes to us courtesy of Tuomas Lempiäinen from Finland, and may become a character in the Chronicles later on.
Once more, we journey onward into the ongoing events of the Jellicle Tribe, as recorded by Rumblepurr, who finally joins the Tribe, and begins his duties as Chronicler.
