When I opened the door my first sight was glass...
The alcohol bottles were smashed onto the ground and it scattered across the carpet of our living room. I tiptoe over the glass with my phone in hand and Honey on speed dial. The ground was still wet and all I could smell was strong alcohol. I turned on the flashlight on my phone so that I didn't let anyone know I was back yet.
"Mom?" I whispered, a little too loud I might add, not wanting to wake my dad up if he was home.
No answer.
"Mom." I say a little louder, on the brim of using my regular voice.
Still nothing.
I checked every room downstairs just to find nothing and so it was time for me to check upstairs. The stairs creaked beneath my feet. I hissed under my breath when my ears heard the first creak of many. I hurried up as fast as I could. When I looked into my parents room, my mom was sound asleep with soft snores. I heard a nauseating noise coming from the bathroom down the hall.
The door is open with a small peek of light shining out. I look inside to see my father getting sick, sitting on the floor near the toilet. His face was just about in the bowl and his hands shook and his knuckles were white from gripping the sides of the rim so hard. Sweat covered his forehead and his face was flushed.
He took a deep breath of air and his chest rose faster as he tried to get a breath. He smiled at me weakly and tiredly like nothing wrong was going on. He wipes some fluids off himself with his sleeve and groans as he spews more fluids into the toilet. His eyes were watering and bloodshot, like he had been crying for hours.
I quickly text Mori and Honey that I'm ok and that they can leave but as I sent it I see their figures coming down the hall.
Perfect, just wonderful...
I gestured them to stop where they were, I looked at my dad.
"Dad," I sigh. "You're hurting yourself... and everyone else... you can't do this anymore..." he looked at me with a guilty expression, as do I when he has tears sliding down his cheeks.
I get a wet cloth and wipe his face off and I hug him as he cries. Mori and Honey stand in the doorway. My dad sniffs and looks up at them, but not angry, only regretful.
My heart had broke for him.
"I'm sorry boys, I didn't know what came over me... I-"
"It's ok!" Honey blurted out cheerfully before my dad could finish, even though I could tell he just felt as bad as I did.
"Yeah." Mori responded after him.
I smiled at my dad. "Why don't you get some rest, you don't look like you've gotten much sleep." I say softly. He nods and walks off to go to sleep. I follow after him with a small garbage container with a plastic bag inside of it. When he got comfortable I could still hear soft sniffling from him. I placed the container next to the bed and closed the door behind me. I walked back out to Mori and Honey again.
"Thanks, again." I smiled. Honey came up and hugged me, when he was done I opened my arms for Mori while blushing. His lips curled up into a smile and he picked me up hugging me, due to being short. I giggled and patted his back.
That night I went to bed feeling like a weight had been lifted off my shoulders.
After that it was way better for the next week or so, my dad had stopped drinking for the most part and I wasn't hit anymore, my mom wasn't hit anymore, it was like before anything happened.
Dad has been trying really hard not to go back to what happened before. He didn't immediately stop but he didn't drink nearly as much and has been slowly getting better.
I had decided that I needed to learn self defense, which led Honey to persuade me to join kendo with Mori. I'm not exactly sure what to do but I'm sure I'll learn.
Today I had school and as I walked, I noticed I smiled more, talked more, and had some bounce in my step.
I was happy.
The only thing left to do was figure out my own feelings.
For the longest time my mind would drift to thinking about Mori and me, how I would blush every time Mori smiled or hugged me. How when he was with his host clients I would get angry and have to walk out for the rest of the session. When he protected me and I would get butterflies. How I started to admire every little thing about him...
I couldn't like Mori... But I think I do.
My thoughts had been rudely cut off by the fact that I had arrived to school. I was first greeted by Mori and Honey as always, Frost would come by too. Today he was more fidgety and even looked a little pink in his cheeks.
"Frost...you good?" He jumped and nodded covering his cheeks with his hands.
"You're sure?" I giggled. "You're blushing a LOT." His eyes narrowed at me and even Mori chuckled at him.
"Oh! Is it a girl!?" He didn't hesitate to shake his head. Wait... How couldn't it be a girl?
I couldn't believe that I had to think about this for as long as I did before I realized something.
"Frost... are you gay?" He didn't respond, he only smiled sheepishly and looked at the ground.
I squealed and squeezed him in a big hug.
"Who's the guy??" He laughed.
"You know him, you actually see him everyday after school." He replied still smiling.
Hmm... who could that be?
