I had been best friends with Dan for years, we met at school in 10th grade when I moved to Berkshire from Canada. I didn’t really fit in there and only had a one other friend that had moved with me, Ela. But then I met Dan. He was the first person in Berkshire to be really nice to me and it didn’t take long for us to become friends. And luckily when Dan moved to London I found out I was accepted into a university there so I moved there about 6 months after him.

Anyway, my friend Oliver had just picked me up from my University and offered to drive me over to Dan’s since he was headed that direction anyway. Oliver had shaggy black hair with bangs that hung over his eyes. He had bright blue eyes, they were the bluest blue you’ve ever seen. To be honest, if I hadn’t met Dan I’d probably have a crush on him. But Ela likes him a ton. She won’t admit it, but I was flipping through her drawing notebook and she has a drawing of him in there. Don’t you dare tell her that I told you that. Don’t even think about it.

“So, why were you going over to Dan’s?” I asked him.

“I’m not, Ela’s pulling an all-nighter so she can finish this massive cake. She probably told you, right?” He replied, glancing away from the road to look at me for a second.

“Yeah, she told me. It’s for one of her toughest classes.” I nodded. Ela goes to a top culinary school, she’s studying to be a pastry chef.

“Well, she was telling me about and I offered to keep her company. I was going to go over there around 8-ish but I don't mind going early.” He glanced at his watch, it was 6:30pm.  I grinned, Ela never told me that Oliver was meeting her there. I bet you anything that she is freaking out right now. Ela isn’t much of a “girly girl” and most of the time the guys she obsesses about are book characters but she is crazy about Oliver. It kills me to think that he might not like her. I mean, he shows all the signs of liking someone but he’s hard to figure out.

“Hey, do you know if Ela… um, never mind.” He wouldn’t make eye contact with me, instead he just stared straight ahead at the road. We pulled up in front of Dan’s house.

We got out of the car and stood at the bottom steps to Dan’s house.

“What?” I asked.

He shook his head, “Nothing.”

“If you were going to ask me if Ela was interested in any guys the answer is yes. And if you were going to ask me if she would say yes if you asked her out, the answer is still yes.” I said, smirking as I ran up the steps.  He blushed beet red, stuffed his hands in his pockets and stared at the ground. I couldn’t help but laugh.

“I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?” I shouted from the doorstep.

“Yeah.” He mumbled as he got back into his car. He gave me a small wave and drove off just as Dan opened the door.

“Hey, come in.” He smiled.

I walked in and set my bag by the front door, taking off my coat. “So, what’s up?” I asked.

“Nothing really...oh, wait. I meant to ask you before you came over but I haven’t filmed this week’s video and was wondering if you wanted to be in it?” He asked, getting all shy. That’s weird, Dan’s never shy.

“Sure!” I smiled and pushed his shoulder lightly, “What is it with you? You’re acting weird.”

“No I’m not!” He shouted, picking me up, slinging me over his shoulder and running down the hallway.

“DANIEL JAMES HOWELL, PUT ME DOWN RIGHT NOW!” I screamed at him, repeatedly hitting his back with my fists.

He laughed and set me down. I glared at him.

“Hey, we both know you can’t stay mad at me.” Dan grinned at me.

“Oh, shut up and stop being so full of yourself.”

“Hi internet!” Dan said to the camera. “This is my friend Maryam,” He said gesturing to me. I smiled at the camera, jeez it’s hard to talk to a camera. Just sayin’.

“And today,” Dan paused, pressed lips together, and then looked up at the camera, “We are going to do the blindfolded make-up challenge.” For some reason we both burst out laughing.

“Okay,” I said gasping for breath, “Let’s do this.”

“You can put the make-up on me first, might as well get it over with.” Dan chuckled, picking up the blindfold, which was one of those sleep eye covers that people use on airplanes. I was about to take it from him so that I could put it on but instead he started to put it on for me. His hand brushed against my ear, which sounds very unromantic, but my stomach fluttered.

I patted the table we had put the make-up on trying to find something to start with. “Foundation, where are you!” I shouted.

Dan laughed, “Foundation! Get down here this instant!”

“Don’t you make me count to 3!” I half snorted trying to contain my laughter.

“Found it!” I said, holding up the foundation, “I think…”

After about 30 minutes we finished filming. Now we were sitting in the living room marathoning Harry Potter movies. We were about halfway through The Prisoner of Azkaban when my thoughts drifted to Dan. I’d had a crush on him for years but I never said anything because I was worried it would ruin our friendship. I knew he didn’t like me but I had decided that it couldn’t hurt to dream about him, right? He was so perfect. I know what you’re going to say, “Nobody’s perfect.” But that’s not what I mean. Dan is perfect because he is not perfect. When I was younger I would dream about how my perfect guy would be perfectly imperfect. Ugh, never mind. You’ll never understand. I snuck a glance at Dan only to find that he had been staring at me. We both blushed and quickly looked away. After we had switched to The Goblet of Fire we made small talk for a while but then Dan started acting weird, like he had earlier.

“Hey, Maryam?” He asked looking down.

“Yeah?”

“I was, um, wondering if maybe you wanted to go on a date with me sometime? I mean, if you don’t want to-“ He probably would’ve gone on but I cut him off. I leaned in so that my lips were almost touching his.

“I’d love to.” I whispered. He gently pressed his lips to mine. You know how people always say they feel butterflies in there stomach? Yeah, well, screw butterflies. I felt like my stomach got tied in a million knots and stuffed itself into my lungs so that I couldn’t breathe.

But it was worth it.
