Calm Before a Storm

It was a day of exultation for the Blue dragons. Queen Aquamarine's egg had finally hatched, sending the first royal drake of the century into the world. King Neptune was delighted and he sent his messenger — Iris — to bring the news to all the colonies. He set a time for the customary gathering and expected all the kings to be there, and they were.

First the Gold king arrived, closely followed by all the other kings. Before they began the ceremony they needed to decide on a name for the drake, otherwise the magic wouldn't work and the gathering would be wasted. They made their way to the cave where the drake was curled up fast asleep. The Gold king — Midas — leaned over the egg-shell that the royal drake was dozing in. He thought that the drake should be called Storm after the coiled markings on his face. Next was the Green king — Malachite — he thought that the drake should be called Titan after his great strength and powerful aura. Then came King Jasper of the Red dragons claiming that he could foretell the future and that the drake would be called Opal because he was the gem of dragon-kind. After that came the Yellow dragon king — Citrine — he agreed with King Midas and that the drake should be called Storm and ultimately came the leader of the joint colony of Black and White dragons — Onyx. He humbly put forward his opinion saying that he thought the drake looked very much like a 'Sapphire' in his eyes. King Neptune agreed, and therefore the drake was name Sapphire.

They held a formal naming ceremony and where the drake was properly named and then it was time for the furnishing of gifts. The dragons went in order of supremacy which caused many arguments among the kings. As the sun set in the sky King Midas stepped forward, he bowed his head and gave his gift to Sapphire. His gift was to have superiority. Secondly was King Citrine he endowed Sapphire with wisdom, then came King Malachite who presented Sapphire with truthfulness and honesty. After King Malachite was King Jasper who decided to give Sapphire the power of invisibility and then lastly came King Onyx who bestowed Sapphire with the gift of being able to speak all tongues.

Following the ceremony all the kings returned to their awaiting colonies. King Neptune retreated into his cave to sleep with his wife and son. However at midnight the messenger —Iris — came rushing into the cave screaming. When Neptune asked what the worry was Iris shook her head and beckoned King Neptune with the point of here tail to come and see for himself. He stumbled blearily out of the cave stopping in his tracks when he saw what had frightened Iris. Several two legged beings were lying stretched out on the ground together. All together there must have been at least fifteen of them - outnumbering the Blue dragons.

King Neptune didn't see what he could do so he held a private council of war under the river with all the Blue dragons minus Sapphire and Queen Aquamarine. They agreed that for the time being they should let the two legged things be because they didn't know anything about them, such has how dangerous and violent they were. All the Blues agreed that they should stay hidden and it was apparent that submerged beneath the water would be the evident place to live while the beings were around.

King Neptune and Queen Aquamarine fared for the safety of Sapphire if they were to live underwater — though Sapphire was born a true Blue dragon, he would find it arduous for the first few weeks of his precious life to breathe underwater. Nevertheless King Neptune had to put the safety of his colony first and by morning they were living in a new land under the water.

Caves for the dragons to sleep in were magically blasted out of the riverbed's walls. The dragons assumed posts so that they could keep their colony alive and well. One year went by, two years, but to the dragons this was merely the equivalent of a week for them. After ten years, when the beings still hadn't left it became evident that the situation was getting desperate.

It became evident that the calm was over.                                                                                                 Now there was a storm to fare through.
