To the man whom I once loved

I wasn’t a big fan of coffee, so I have to admit it was weird one of our chosen meet- up spots was a cafe. One of the reasons I hadn’t been inside the shop for years, even though I passed by almost every day. At least we weren’t sitting in our past frequent seat.

The booths towered over both of our heads and I sat still, not bothering to order a cup.

"So, would you like to have a cup of coffee?"

"Hmm."

He called the waiter over and dropped an order.

"A cup of café au lait please. “

I looked at him, looked at how confident he was. He always knew what I wanted. He was always caring, considerate. When I was down in the dumps, he would try his best to cheer me up; when I fell ill, he would take great care of me. Just when I was about to close my eyes and indulge myself in the past, he looked back at me and gave a bright smile.

The dazzle seemed too bright now, too happy. He was never like this in the past. Something about him always kept him back from actual happiness; he kept guarded. As I stared harder at his unchanging expression, of the contours and planes and of his face that hadn’t worn down all these years, the lights around us flickered on. The warm lamps above each table illuminated what was once a dim cafe. So, twilight had reached us.

He was fond of twilight; he adored its beauty. When twilight approached, he’d bring me to the beach to have a walk along the coast. We’d have heart-to-heart talks. Oh, how I missed the twilight! Twilight was not just twilight, it was a binder of love, of relationship.

After I had the last drop of my coffee, we stared at each other. He looked at me with his bright, rare blue eyes. They had always been attractive to me.

"So, as I was saying-"

"Let’s not talk about it right now, Alex."

"No, we have to get this clear."

"I’m not ready for the truth."

"You have to listen to me."

"Why? You’ve never listened to me; you’ve never listened to the sound of my heart!"

The twilight had faded away, so had my feelings. I frowned and stood up. I wanted to leave the shop. I hated everything. I hated the coffee I drank, I hated the shop, I hated the atmosphere in the shop, I hated him.

He held my hand with a firm grip.

"I left you because I was in love with a man!"
