As much as I wanted them to, his lips never met mine. Instead, he pulled away as the door creaked open. He sighed as someone walked in and stood next to him. He was tall with the same black hair and golden eyes as Steve. He had broader shoulders than Steve and a more square face. Behind him strolled in a girl who looked like Steve and the stranger. She had long black hair that hung in pretty loose ringlets past her shoulders and her golden eyes flamed angrily at me. Both of them glared at me. It was obvious that they were family members of Steve’s so I just sat there awkwardly under their hard gazes. After the longest silence, two sighs were heard, Steve’s and mine.

“What are you guys doing here?” he asked.

“Is something wrong?” I asked him quietly. He shook his head.

“If my brother and sister would stop worrying about me, I’d be just fine!” he hissed at the two.

“We just want you to come with us!” The girl begged, her voice was soft and silky, just like her brother’s. “But this asshole stole you from us!” she hissed at me.

“Seriously? I’m an asshole? All I did was help him,” I grumbled.

“It wasn’t your job to help him, you’re just some stranger! You could’ve hurt him!” She glared.

“I assure you two, I’d never hurt Steve,” I vowed.

“If you weren’t in that hospital bed already, I’d kick your ass!” she spat.

“That’s enough, Lillian!” Steve shouted, jumping out of his seat. “Adam here has been taking care of me and has even taken a beating while I stood by like a coward and he still lets me talk to him! Leave him alone!”

“Just butt out of it, little brother,” the older man hissed to Steve.

“It’s my decision who I want to hang with, you butt out!” he shouted back.

“He’s only going to hurt you like everyone else!” Lillian argued.

“He’s not like everyone else, Lil!” he said. His face was red with anger and his hands were balled up in fist. They were so close to me, I wanted to reach out and grab it to let him know it’s alright. Before I knew it, my hand was wrapped around his wrist. His angry yellow eyes met mine and I stared at him softly.

“It’s alright, Steve. Maybe you should just listen to them; I don’t want you to get hurt on my account,” I told him. He yanked his wrist out of my grip.

“I was fine before you came along and I’ll be fine now, I can deal with the yobs on my own,” he said.

“But what if they found out that I liked you?” I said, my voice rising gradually. “What if they hate me for whatever reason and they wanted to get back at me? If they wanted to get back at me, and they knew I liked you, they’d go after you first! Steve, if that happened, I’d hate myself. As much as I’d like you to stay with me, I also think that you should listen to your siblings. If they don’t like you living with me, then I respect that. If you go live with them, I’m sure we could still hang out.” I hope anyway. Steve stood their awestruck. He turned to his brother and sister.

“Lillian, Chad… c-could I have a moment with Adam?” he asked softly. Lillian and Chad looked back and forth between me and their younger brother.

“Come to the car when you’re ready,” she said. He nodded and they left. He sat back in his seat and scooted it close to me.

“So… you like me?” he asked, his cheeks red. I nodded and took his hand.

“Steve, you’re gorgeous and your kind and I’d actually give up a lot to protect you,” I smiled. His smile was soft on his face and tucked behind his long hair but it was there.
