I hopped up, putting my cereal on the coffee table. I rushed to my room, quickly grabbed a thick blanket and wrapped it around my waist. There was one more knock at the door and a dashed to the door and opened it, out of breath.
“Hey, did I wake you?” Steve asked. I shook my head and smiled.
“Come in,” I said, opening the door wider and moving out of the way for him. He kicked off his shoes and sat down beside me.
“Thanks,” he said.
“No problem!” I grinned, pulling my cereal onto my lap. “So how’s your brother and sister?” I asked. He sighed and set his head on my shoulder.
“I can barely breath around them! I had to sneak out to see you… I’m a 20 year old man… and I had to sneak out to see my boyfriend,” he sighed. I frowned but shoveled some Fruit Loops into my mouth.
“I’m sorry,” I frowned. “Why are they like that, if you don’t mind me asking.”
“When I was younger, anyone that I met-friends, boyfriends, girlfriends from before I realized, strangers-they’d all somehow make me really upset. All my friends ditched me after everyone started making fun of me and calling me a queer and bashing on the for hanging out with me, boyfriends used me, I’ve been beaten by strangers and shit. It’s just not good,” he chuckled. “Well, I guess they don’t really trust me with anyone besides family, rendering me with no life,” he sighed.
“Oh, that sucks some mega giraffe abortions,” I said.
“Uh, giraffe abortions?” he chuckled.
“Yeah, unborn giraffe fetuses,” I rolled my eyes. “Don’t you know what an abortion is?” I said. He just laughed and shook his head.
“You’re something else, Adam,” he smiled.
“Yeah well,” I shrugged.
“So how’s Alice doing?” he asked me. I groaned and put my head on his.
“She’s good alright, man I missed you yesterday,” I frowned.
“Sorry, Lilian wouldn’t let me,” he said. “What happened?”
“Okay, I get in the car and she’s like ‘it’s been a while since I’ve seen you!’ and I’m like ‘that’s cause you’ve been seeing everyone else.’ So she’s like ‘oh well you had Steve, you don’t need me!’ and I was like ‘pfftt—yeah, I do, I always need you!” and then she like went off on me, saying how I was always relying on her and how she doesn’t have time for herself cause she’s always taking care of me and that’s not true! She was never there when I needed her! She wasn’t there when I got my ass kicked by anyone, when my parents kicked my ass, she just watched! She was at our grandparents house when--!” I stopped myself, holding my breath. “Anyways,” I said, trying to push away those flash backs with a spine quaking cringe, “when I finally got her back from all the bad times, I didn’t want to let her go because all the good things happened around her.”
“Damn…” Steve trailed. “Your parents… beat you?” he asked. I nodded. “Why!” he nearly shouted, his head shooting up like a rocket and hitting me accidentally, but he didn’t seem to notice as he looked at me wide-eyed.
“Well… they only planned on having one little gift from God, Alice. When I came as a surprise, they saw me as a little devil and they hated me, er, that’s what I think,” I told him with a frown.
“What else did they do to you?” he asked.
“I’d rather not think of it,” I chuckled nervously.
