"So why the sudden change, and what's this all about?"
Kyler scanned the bedroom he was in, sitting up and taking a deep breath. This was it. The day was finally here. He truly couldn't remember the last time he had felt so nervous; actually....on second thought he definitely could. Kyler was always a bit of an over-thinker and sitting in contemplation made him realize that he quite vividly remembered almost throwing up the time the band played their first gig at The Cove.
With a sigh, he pushed off the bed and stumbled across the room, heading to his bathroom. Kyler brushed his teeth, and ran cold water over his face. He paused his morning routine for a moment, staring at his reflection in the mirror. He was well aware that there was nothing special about him--in fact he was absolutely sure of it. Kyler was characterized by one word--dull. He had dull light brown hair, dull brown eyes, and his not-so-pale but not-too-tan complexion made him the poster child for average; yet in spite of all this, everyday hundreds of thousands of people came to see him and his friends play music. The fans even wrote him fan mail whenever they had the chance.
Today was different though, Kyler reminded himself. The band had agreed to make good on the promise Kyler made to the staff at Clearview Camp for Troubled Youth. A promise that Kyler had to make good on. He had told Director Johnson that he was going to clean up his act, make them proud and then come back to tell his story for the others, the campers that would come after him. Now after 5 years Kyler could finally follow through. It was a terrifying realization but it was one that he'd recently come to be extremely proud of.
Kyler rushed off to his closet, picking out the only clean sweatshirt, which happened to be one with his band (High Resolution)'s logo plastered on the front. He had hoped to be more tactful and not give the impression that he was shamelessly promoting his own band, but beggars couldn't be choosers and this was the first time Kyler had stepped foot in his apartment in months. As he put on his clothes Kyler heard an obnoxious knocking sound at his door, but he didn't even bother attempting to open it seeing as he knew who the person was and he was positive said person had a key. He heard a key turn in the lock and his suspicions were confirmed as he headed to his living room.
"Damn Ky, this place looks even more depressing than it did the last time we got to go back home." His band mate and best friend Evan stated with a frown his tone riddled with judgement as he scanned the miserable looking apartment. High Resolution was pretty popular so technically, as far as finances were concerned, Kyler had no excuse for the state that his apartment was in. He simply shrugged and immediately regretted it as soon as Evan scowled at him. "Ky you said you were better, if you aren't ready for this maybe-" Kyler quickly cut his friend off mid sentence. "Ev of course I'm ready for this! This is what would've made them proud, this is why I got this far!" He finished his voice full of pure determination.
Evan smirked, "Now that's the Kyler Davenport the ladies know and love. Let's go, Jackson and Avery are waiting for us in the car." Kyler grabbed his duffel bag as they headed out. Life on the road made it easy to discover what was essential and what wasn't. Kyler learned that pretty much everything he needed could easily fit into the same little blue duffel bag he'd been dragging around with him since they started High Resolution back in the 6th grade.
Kyler studied Evan as they walked through the apartment building's grand lobby. Plenty of famous people lived in the well-reputed building so they weren't bothered too often, although the occasional teenager did happen to bring a friend over and conveniently "forget" they were on the wrong floor.
Kyler had known Evander Winters since they met in Mrs. Green's 1st Grade Class at Clearview Elementary. She'd asked the class what they wanted to be when they grew up and both boys replied "Rock Stars", they had been best friends ever since that fateful day. They were polar opposites though, Kyler had noted that plenty of times throughout their years of friendship.
Evan was perfection personified. Blonde hair, blue eyes and total muscle, he was always the most popular in school, and his face was always the first to be picked out of a crowd. Evan was arrogant too, his cockiness made him as many enemies as his charisma made him friends. Kyler on the other hand was quiet and content with being overlooked. Evan would've made a perfect front-man for a band, but seeing as he couldn't sing to save his life, and happened to be pretty talented with his hands he ended up-High Resolution's lead guitarist. For all of his less than charming attributes Evan was always there for his best friend. He may have been a class-A dick to everyone else, but he was fiercely protective of Kyler especially since the tragedy.
Kyler cleared his thoughts of what happened as well as Evan as they approached the car. Thinking about Evan for too long always made his stomach twist in a way that he didn't even want to begin thinking about. "Took you losers long enough, damn!" Avery shouted, hanging out the window with a goofy smile on his face. Avery was the band's drummer, he always had a class-clown personality and when he tried out for the drumming position in High Resolution, Evan and Kyler knew he was a perfect fit. His fire engine red hair and freckles made him even more goofy and lovable.
"Oh Avery, I know you can't help but be jealous but you gotta understand, perfection like this takes time." Evan replied with a smirk as he and Kyler got in the car. The boys took in their surroundings glad to see there weren't any paparazzi in their midst as they all headed out of the parking lot. Jackson was quiet as usual as Evan and Avery continued their banter. His silence was expected, he had mysterious bassist written all over him, with his jet black hair, and calm attitude, when Evan asked him to join the band he replied cooly," Yeah sure man," before he could finish the question and walked away leaving the blonde haired boy slack-jawed.
Kyler's silence, on the other hand, wasn't due to his personality but rather his extreme nervousness. He was doubting himself again. Doubting his achievements, doubting his progress and doubting if he was really a good mentor for these teens. The car speed down the busy city streets as Kyler mulled over his thoughts, he was suddenly startled by an abrupt stop. "Sorry dudes, I forgot there was a light over here." Avery said, goofy smile still intact as he rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. Kyler opened his mouth to answer when he heard the sound of cameras flashing. He slowly turned his head and saw a man with a camera right outside his slightly rolled down window. "Kyler, Kyler how does it feel to be helping these trainwrecks? Are you just doing it for image?" The man shouted
Kyler wrinkled his brow and a deep-rooted frown set in on his face. Is that what everyone thought, that he was doing it for image? If only they knew that Kyler was one of these 'trainwrecks' only a few years ago. It was always shocking to him that it never got out, but then again he had been going by his middle name for years and they may not have put two and two together. Avery quickly sped away as soon as the light changed and the paparazzo's question went unanswered. As Avery began to drive down more woodsy areas the boys all knew they were getting close. Close to Clearview Camp for Troubled Youth. And as the sign appeared all of the boys felt uneasy, for reasons they couldn't put their finger on.
They were all about to get closer to something, one boy would get closer to his past, one boy to his future, one to his heart and one to himself; they just didn't know it, or how hard it would get. But Clearview had that effect on it's campers, the boys just had no idea. Actually no one at Clearview knew just quite what they were in store for. Well, except for Director Johnson of course.
