Chapter 5:

We ride in comfortable silence, not feeling the need to fill it with meaningless chatter. I look at Philip and watch his face as he drives. He glances at me from the corner of his eye and catches me. His lips curve into his signature smile, easy, slightly crooked, and absolutely breathtaking.

"What? Do I have something on my face?" he jokes, glancing at me. "Or is it that I'm simply, irresistibly gorgeous?" His eyes find mine and, inside their depths, love shines through.

"Oh, it's totally because you're such a handsome man, so sexy and mysterious," I joke back, lightly caressing his arm. He shivers and watches me with heavy, bedroom eyes. I blush, but don't turn away. My hand slides up to his and pulls it from the wheel. "And just a reminder, you are driving and I don't want to crash into a tree or something," I remind him, twining my fingers into his. He smirks slightly and turns his face back to the road. I reach across the dash and flip on the radio, put in a CD, and smile up at Philip.

"What do you say we head to the cafe first?" he asks me softly, pressing his lips to my hand.

"Okay, but just so you know, I probably need to stay at Jenna's house tonight. My dad isn't going to be happy with me when I get back tomorrow," I answer, grimacing at the thought.

"Why do you have to stay at Jenna's? I mean, you could just stay with me." My face heats up at the thought of staying with Philip. "I know my mom would be glad to see you there, and she wouldn't mind if you stayed," he continues, the idea forming swiftly in his mind. "You can have dinner with us and you can stay with me in my room." I feel my heart speed up to an unhealthy rate. My breath catches in my throat and my face turns a bright, flaming red.

"Well, I mean, I don't want to impose on anyone...." I laugh nervously. I look out the window and watch as the houses go by.

He just snorts at my reasoning. "Don't tell me you're afraid of staying with me tonight," he laughs. My blush spreads down my neck and across my collar bone. We pull up to the coffee shop and he turns off the ignition. I watch as he opens the door and slips out, coming over to the passenger side to open mine. He offers his hand and I take it. Philip takes the lead and pulls me along, opening the door to an aroma of warmth and sugary sweetness. I inhale like my life depended on it, taking in the scent of coffee, the sweet pastries lining up in the glass counter. My mouth waters as each new smell surrounds me. I close my eyes and just breath.

"I told you that you'd love it," he breaths into my ear, his warm breath tickling my ear. My eyes open slowly and I turn to face him.

Without a word, I pull his face towards mine. Our lips mold together and start to burn as tongue slips past my lips and dances with my own. My arms wrap around his neck and hold him to me. I smile against his lips and sigh. The clearing of a throat instantly breaks us apart. We both turn to see the cashier and the scant amount of customers grinning at our little performance. I look at my feet while my face goes pink. Philip just laughs and takes my hand, pulling me up to the counter.

"May I take your order?" she asks, seeming slightly bemused.

Still smiling, Philip asks for two blueberry muffins and two peppermint-mocha lattes, each with its own peppermint stick. She rings up our order and tells us to have a seat.

"We'll call you when it's ready," she smiles, giving us one last amused look before taking the next order. We take a little booth beside a window and sit across from one another.

"So, how did you find this place?" I ask, noting how it was in a little corner on the other side of town.

"Well, I was trying to find a good photo of a coffee shop for my album cover, and I saw a picture of this old place. When I found out it was in town, I went and checked it out. Kind of glad I did, too, because they have the best muffins I've ever had." He cups his chin in his hands in thought. "Well, I also saw this other place called Rayden's Nook, but that was all the way up in Wenona, so I don't think I could have gone there." He leans his head down and looks up at me from beneath his thick black lashes. My heart quickens and adrenaline floods my system, making me quake. We stare at each other for what seems like forever, but in reality was probably only a few seconds.
