oikawa learns a lot about kuroo when he climbs through his window again.

he plays volleyball with his friend named kenma. he's the team captain. he likes cats, a lot. his favourite food is grilled salted mackerel pike. he goes to nekoma, the school oikawa is supposed to attend but, of course, can't. he likes going to the beach. and he sleeps really strangely, which is why his hair sticks up like it does.

kuroo learns a lot about oikawa too.

he likes milk bread and movies about aliens. he has an older sister with very pretty hair who keeps him company sometimes. he sometimes watches volleyball on tv for fun because he can't play. he once tried to go outside and he had to go to the hospital. he's never going to get better. he can only get up to go to the toilet.

kuroo thinks oikawa is unfortunate, but he still likes him. oikawa's funny and easy to annoy, but he doesn't seem to mind that much. he's fun. kuroo's going to stop by more often.

oikawa's mother meets kuroo for the first time. she's surprised, and kind of alarmed, but she seems to be happy about it.

she brings them cookies and they talk. oikawa tells kuroo about his book. it's an old book, falling apart, consisting mostly of pictures. it's called 'goodnight moon'. kuroo thinks it's cool that oikawa can read so well.

kuroo comes by less when school starts, but he comes by nonetheless. his parents drop him off now, so he doesn't climb through the window.

"is school fun?" oikawa asks, eating a grape.

"yeah! totally!" kuroo grins, "i'm already ahead with reading."

"can you read to me?" oikawa asks.

"what should i read?"

"a textbook."

"eh? but they're boring," kuroo replies, a disgusted look on his face.

"i want to see what they're like!" oikawa defends, "i still don't have mine, because they want to try to fix my heart first."

"fix it?"

"yeah!" oikawa grins. kuroo does too.

"can you play volleyball then?"

"mhm!" oikawa nods happily. "i'll be the best player with kuroo-chan!"

the surgery fails. kuroo has to visit oikawa in the hospital. he's still recovering. something went wrong. his mom told him oikawa almost died. he wanted to go right away, but he had to wait.

it's christmas, and kuroo insisted that he go give oikawa a present. so he's in his mom's car, staring out of the window as they drive to the hospital. it's cold outside, but the car is warm, and kuroo's excited. he clings on to the present under his arm.

when they arrive he doesn't hold on to his mom's hand, but on to the gift in stead. they walk to the reception, ask for his room number and head over.

oikawa lights up when kuroo walks in. his mom's next to him, playing a board game with him. kuroo runs over and jumps on to the bed.

"tetsurou!" his mother scolds, but oikawa doesn't seem to be in pain, so she leaves them be.

"here you go!" he grins, handing him the perfectly wrapped present (his mother had wrapped it). oikawa opens it and gasps.

"kuroo-chan!" he exclaims, "you got it!" he holds up the big book, with short stories for beginning readers.

"mhm! i asked sensei and he arranged it for me!" he says proudly. oikawa hugs him tightly.

"thank you kuroo-chan!"

oikawa goes to school for the first time. he's homeschooled, but the doctors said he could try it out, as long as he doesn't do anything too strenuous.

kuroo's surprised when he appears, but immediately perks up. "oikawa!" he exclaims, running over to him as he enters the classroom in a wheelchair, pushed by his mother.

"hi kuroo-chan," he smiles back. his mother wheels him over to the chair next to kuroo.

"tetsurou-kun, would you mind looking after him for today?" she asks him. "i have to go to work. sensei will watch as well, of course, but i'd like it if you helped."

"of course, oikawa-san!" he smiles proudly, "i'll take care of him!"

kuroo spends the day keeping a close eye on his best friend, who's writing down some new kanji, tongue sticking out of the corner of his mouth as he does. he smiles and realizes how proud he is of his best friend.
