I hadn't gone to school for the last few days... I wasn't chicken-shitting out, it's just I was so absorbed in this book.
I had read the first few pages, the first few quotes and I guess chants or spells? It was so weird, all this Latin and Gaelic... I didn't understand half of it, so I ended up using Google Translate.
Now it was Wednesday, and I was turned towards my window, breathing deeply. I hadn't been able to get Andrew off my mind over the whole weekend. Even Monday and Tuesday, the days I didn't go to school, he was all I was able to think about. I had constantly tossed and turned at night and was pacing and thinking during the day. I was currently wondering how he was doing, what or who he was doing, that is.
There was a light rap on my door. I groaned and snuggled deeper into my sheets.
"Evelynn," I heard my mother's soft voice on the other side of the door. "Please get up. I'm not going to let you stay in your room again and miss another day of school. What would today be, number five?" Actually, no, number four, I thought grudgingly. I rubbed my eyes thoroughly, sitting up.
"Alright mom," I sighed, lifting my dead and weakened body from my bed. I got in the shower and got out just as quickly, smelling like vanilla and lavender. I pulled on my burgundy sweats and a long-sleeved black T-shirt. I left my hair down, my bangs partially falling into my eyes. After brushing and thoroughly straightening it, I grabbed my backpack and slipped on my black Sperry's. I barely put on any makeup, opting for concealer and mascara. I walked downstairs into the kitchen.
"Morning family," I said, forcing a smile onto my face. All I wanted to do was go back to bed and think of Andrew some more.
"Morning honey," my dad said, side-hugging me and planting a kiss on my forehead. I genuinely smiled at him.
"Good morning," my mom said, sitting on the counter casually in a grey pantsuit, a red tank top underneath. Gosh. My mom made going to work look hot.
"Evie!" Eva squealed, running at me full speed. A big smile stretched over my lips as I scooped her up, spinning her around. "Where have you been!? I missed you!"
"I'm sorry, babe," I cooed, snuggling my head in her brown-auburn hair. "I promise I won't do it again." I held my pinky out to her. "Pinky promise I will."
Eva hooked her tiny pinky-finger with mine. "Promise!"
I took her to school afterwards, and drove solemnly to my school. God, this was going to be so awkward.
It was about mid-September, almost October, which is why I wore a long-sleeved shirt. I pulled into the student parking lot of the school. I shut off the truck and sat, staring at my hands. I was squeezing the steering wheel just a little too hard apparently, because my hands were red. I clenched my fist, locking my teeth together. Man the hell up, Ev. It's just school! It's not like you cared what the school thought before.
And in truth, I still didn't. Only one person's opinion of me mattered now.
I shook my head roughly, jumping out and grabbing my bag. I slammed my door with unnecessary force and leaned my head against it and breathed deeply.
His mouth-watering scent drifted into my nose. My eyes shot open. He was here.
I marched towards the school. The entire place basically stopped and stared. Head held high, I walked confidently dow the hall. No one could intimidate me. Not today.
"So she returns."
The stark, nasally voice stopped me. The hand at my side clenched into a fist as I breathed in her heavy perfume.
