It was pitch black, but Raven's perfect night vision picked out the tiniest of details as she ran along the winding path through the thick forest. Any other night she would marvel at the beauty of nature as she made her way towards the old shack on the hill. Tiny closed flower buds resting and waiting to burst into bloom when the sun rises and hits their fragile forms with the warmth of late Spring; creatures of all shapes and sizes, some busy scurrying towards or away from the danger of nocturnal hunts that take place every time the moon shines; others curled in tight little balls, sleeping and saving their energy for whatever the new dawn brings.
But Raven was scared. For her tonight was not a night for marvelling at the wonders of the forest, tonight was a night of fear, if she didn't reach the shack in time. What Raven didn't know was that life for her was going to change forever...
In her mind, Raven plays back the events that took place just hours before. For a moment she felt ashamed that she had been so bored and uninspired by her short life so far. She had always craved for adventure, excitement, danger, anything really - because deep inside she knew there was something special, something more that she was destined for than village life; she just had no idea what it might be. Harper, her mother, was always telling Raven that her head was in the clouds and that destiny for everyone born in Lightfoot was to protect the village, work the fields and care for the farm animals. "Blah, blah, blah..." said Raven to herself, before jarring her mind back to the present and the danger facing the villagers right now.
Eventually Raven could see the small clearing that marked the approach to the old shack. She didn't dare slow down for fear that each precious second could mean the difference between helping the village or exposing it to great danger. Exhausted, she fell into the ramshackle porch that looked as though the tiniest of breeze would make it topple over. Lifting her fist, Raven banged on the door.
"Ma Blackshank!" She cried. "Ma Blackshank!"
"Bugger off!" was the reply...
