Raven's startlingly blue eyes gazed pleadingly at Ma Blackshank as she finished telling her what had happened. Ma watched as the beautiful girl with such tanned skin and jet black hair, curled further into the old armchair and began to cry. Penfold looked up and paused momentarily from chewing the rug.

"Ma, what can we do? We have no idea what they want or where to find it. If they attack us we can't fight them... well, except for me who can give them a good slap, but that's hardly going to get us anywhere is it?" sobbed Raven.

As Raven had described the events of the previous day, Ma had hidden her initial shock and subsequent anger. She needed to hear every detail about what had happened and had only interrupted Raven when she needed even finer detail than she had already given. Had anyone seen the strangers faces? Was Raven the only one that had been able to touch them? Did anyone get hurt? Otherwise Ma had stayed silent and let the girl speak.

"Raven, you did right coming to me. Sorry about the 'bugger off' thing earlier - that'll teach me won't it!" Ma tried to jest. "One last question - could you see anything through the mesh of their masks? Any clue as to who was lurkin underneath?"
"No" said Raven "But there was something not right about them Ma. They didn't seem to fit right somehow - does that make sense, 'cause I can't explain it any other way?"

"Yes, it makes complete sense..." Ma replied quietly. She pondered for a few moments, deep in thought, before continuing. "Raven, there's something I need to explain to you, but you have to trust that I can only tell you what you need to know.  There's no askin me questions or askin for more than I shall say right now. Do you understand?" Ma frowned as she looked into Raven's eyes.
"Um... I'm not sure I do understand no... But I do trust you Ma, more than anyone" replied Raven.
"Right then, that'll do for me girl.  The thing is, I reckon I know who these... strangers are.  Met 'em before, a long long time ago. Never thought they would come back - weren't supposed to come back!" Ma began.  "I'll talk to 'em, in the morning when they come back to the village, but you need to keep away from them do you hear?  Stay at home and don't come out til they go."

"But how will you make them go away Ma? Do you know what The Angel is? How come you know them, no-one in the village has ever seen anyone like them!" Raven blurted the questions out one after the other.
"Like I said girl, no questions!" scolded Ma.
"And like I said Ma, I'm not a girl, I'm nearly 18!" retorted Raven feeling the frustration of not being told what was going on.

"Humph..." grunted Ma.
