~Caroline~

"Hey, Caroline. Look what I found in dad's desk!" Christopher had come into the kitchen the next morning when I was fixing breakfast. I looked down at the little boy who had a tiny ring box in his hands. Immediately my eyes widened at the shiny little squared diamond on the ring. His eyes were lit like Christmas in October.

"Christopher! You know how your dad feels about you being in the study. Go put it back, right now." I told him and I don't think I had ever talked to him in such a stern tone before. My heart was racing and my stomach had fallen all over the marble floor at my feet. Was that really an engagement ring?

Chris's face fell into a pout at he looked up at me. "It's really pretty though, huh, Caroline? Do you think dad is going to ask you be his wife?" He asked me next and he couldn't have said that any louder.

"Yes, it is very pretty. Give it to me so I can put it back." When I went to take the box from he dashed away from me. "Christopher. Unless you want dad mad at the both of us you will go put that back, right now." I called. I was going to fallow him but I didn't want to burn the eggs. I turned the burner off before I went on the hunt.

"Chris?" I made my way down the hallway until I reached his bedroom. The door was opened so I went into the blue bedroom. It was eerily quiet. I expected him to at least be snickering. "Chris, please. Come out so when can return it." I called, hoping that he would stop his little came of Hide and Seek.

I went to the small bed and got onto my knees. When I looked under the bed the only things there was a few lost toys and a sock. Next, I went to the closet. Empty. This is why I had no desire to have children. Infants, fine but small children liked to fuck around to much. I left the small bedroom and went down to the study. "Chris, I'm going to tell your dad you took it if you do not come out." I rolled my eyes at how very nonthreatening I sounded. Guess that was my own fault for being his friend most of the time.

I searched every single part of that damned study and he was not there. "Damn it." I whispered to myself before I left the room. I did however learn that he had gotten it from the bottom right drawer, only because it was half way open.

When I went back onto the kitchen, Sol was there, staring down at the uncooked eggs. "You know the eggs aren't done, right?" He asked me. I laughed and went to where he was.

"I know, I was trying to find Christopher. Apparently, he is a very good hider." I replied and turned the burner back on to finish. I swear...if that child did not put that ring back...Silently, Sol went to the coffee maker and poured coffee into his cup. My belly was still doing little nervous flips. Was he going to ask me to marry him? Surely...unless the ring was his grandmothers or something. But it had looked pretty brand new. My mind was racing as I finished breakfast.

Finally the little boy came out of hiding when Sol called him for breakfast. As the three of us sat at the table to eat, I could see no signs that the little boy still had the ring.

"Dad, are you going to ask Caroline to be your wife?" He asked halfway through breakfast. I swallowed the bite in my mouth slowly and looked over at Sol, curious about his answer. His eyebrows had drawn low as he looked over at Christopher. "Because I found a ring in your desk and it was real pretty dad. Even Caroline thought so." Christopher continued.

My eyes suddenly widened...That. Little. Turd. "You know you're not supposed to be in my study." Is all Sol said and didn't even look over at me.

"I know. I'm sorry dad. Don't worry, I put it back. That is why Caroline was looking for me." The little boy looked up at me and snickered. 'Oh yea, definitely not having children,' I told myself as I narrowed my gaze on the little boy. Before Sol could say anything about the the bell sounded.
