Chapter 7

Alex walked down the street slowly; his shoulders hunched making his frame smaller, trying to stay inconspicuous. Ahead he spied a group of thugs; wanna be bad boys hanging at the mouth of an alleyway obviously looking for trouble, someone to bully and Alex was determined not to be that someone. He bowed his head down further and continued to walk, his mind straying to Zyla. She was the most beautiful girl he had ever seen in all his lifetime. He was blown away by her beauty, her smell, the way she spoke, the way she walked. Alex shook his head; he was becoming obsessed with her, following her around like a lost puppy. He had first seen her at her local shopping centre with her friends and she had stuck out from the crowd like a beacon of light. That was two weeks ago and since then Alex had begun to follow her around, delighted by the thought that she lived only a few doors away from his home and that there was a huge tree located just opposite her house which gave good views of the front of her house and her bedroom. Recently he had taken to sitting on that particular tree gazing into her room watching her sleep. Alex hadn’t realised how hard it would be to resist the temptation, her sweet smell which drifted over to him whenever he was close.

'Hey you?' Alex was rudely interrupted from his day dream, his head jerked up and his footsteps faltered. The group of boys had noticed him and were now crowding the pavement. Alex did a quick head count and counted about 8 boys. He reached them and decided to ignore and walk past but found his way blocked by one of the guys.

'So what you got there?' The guy pointed at his back pack. Alex shrugged and answered 'Just my back pack.'

'Any Money?'

Alex shrugged once again and said 'none for you.'

He was shoved against the wall, his head hitting the bricks. Alex winced and clenched his teeth. This could get messy he thought.

'None of that cheek, you got it, just give me your money.' The boy hissed, one hand holding his arm and the other pressed against his neck. Alex began to struggle, trying to remove the hands from his neck which were tightening by the second. The other boys began crowding around Alex, poking him everywhere. He tried desperately to rein in his anger all the while continuing to struggle. The guy holding Alex removed his hand from his arm and punched Alex across his face. Alex’s head was thrown back, hitting the wall behind him once again. He could feel the beginnings of a bump developing. The guy dropped him onto the ground and moved back, the others crowding around in a loose circle. Alex lay slumped against the wall, his eyes never breaking contact with the other guys.

‘You going to give me your money or should I carry on.’ He gestured to Alex lying against the wall. Alex grunted then began to stand up holding the wall for assistant, looking around trying to see if there was any help but the street was deserted. ‘Great’. He thought, ‘When I need help there’s no one around’. Alex felt a vicious kick to his stomach and he slumped down again trying to get his breath back. This time he could not take it anymore and in the blink of an eye he was standing holding the leader by the neck. There was a collective gasp from the other guys, shock clearly displayed in all their eyes, some taking steps back not able to believe what they saw. Alex tightened his hold on the guy’s neck, his eyes popping from their sockets, his breathing coming out in short pants, his hands desperately clawing at Alex’s arms and hands. ‘This is what you get; a dosage of your own medicine.’ Alex hissed, suddenly one of the boys kicked him in the back. Abruptly, he dropped the leader and turned around his hands clenched into fists, his body strung taut, his eye colour shifting between green and black as he strained to keep his anger in check. ‘Who was that?’ Alex hissed. 3 boys broke from the circle and began sprinting away, too frightened to comprehend what was happening. ‘Dude what’s happening to your eyes?’ One out of the five remaining boys said disbelief clear in his voice. Alex took two steps forward and punched the guy across the face with enough force to knock him to ground.  He reached for the guy standing to his left, gripping the front of his t-shirt and pulled him towards himself kneading him in the stomach a few times and then threw him on top of the leader who was trying to crawl away from the scene. Alex looked towards one of the boys who was struggling to pull away one of the fallen guys. Upon noticing Alex’s gaze on him, he scrambled up, fear evident on his features, turned and bolted from the scene.  Alex stood in the middle of the pavement and assessed his damage. Two thugs were still lying on the ground and the other lay unconscious. Alex picked up his bag, stepped over the person in his way and continued down the street. That will teach them, he thought. Alex reached his house, pulled out his keys from his bag and pushed open the door. The house was empty and his footsteps echoed as he ran up the wooden stairs and into his room, slamming the door shut, he dropped his bag and flopped onto the bed with a loud sigh. Alex lay on the bed sound asleep exhausted from the day’s activities.

It was nearing dusk and Alex had just woken up from his nap. He sat up and stretched his arms up over his head, wincing in the process. He walked to the three quarter length square mirror placed over the sink in his en suite bathroom and examined his reflection.  There was a bruise on his cheek and deep scratches running up and down his arms and hands. His stomach was sore and there was a bump on the back of his head. His injuries were beginning to fade as he was a quick healer but they would still be there the next day. Alex sighed. He would probably be the topic of gossip tomorrow, no doubt.
