Chapter 10

Arms swinging by her side, hand tightly clenched around a bread packet, Zyla strolled along on her way to the local park. A slight breeze picked up causing her to shiver and pull her thin jacket tightly around herself. She had purposely left her scarf hanging on her wardrobe door. She had not anticipated that it would be this cold and regretted her decision. The days were quickly beginning to shift into nightfall as the hours were becoming less. It was surprisingly cool as it usually was very cold by the start of October. She would need to take her winter coat out from the end of her closet along with her gloves. She neared the park gates, her boots clanking against the pavement. She entered the park and made her way to the pond. A few ducks were gently gliding across. It was surprisingly quiet for a Sunday afternoon. A few children where playing a game of football at the end of the park. Zyla could hear their shouts of frustration and carefree laughter as they enjoyed each others company. On the other side of the pond sat a elderly couple, conversing between themselves. A woman walked her dog along the path, earphones plugged in to her ears. Zyla spied a few squirrels scampering up the oak tree beside the pond. She could see a few people swinging on the swings towards the end of the park. She sat on one of the empty benches and began to tear up the pieces of bread and flung them on to the water. She watched the water ripple slightly as the pieces of bread spread out in different directions. Suddenly the ducks and swans converged together, frantically picking up the pieces with their beaks. Zyla watched amused as the ducks ate their fill. The swans really were beautiful creatures. Their feathers as white as snow, their elegant long necks bobbed around as they ate. They were free from all burdens and existed peacefully. Zyla huffed as she stood up to throw away the empty packet, sitting back down again her thoughts strayed to Alex. She recalled how his date had ended early and how he hardly communicated with Catherine. What was the point of continuing with such a relationship? A relationship with no communication was not a relationship at all. Catherine is beautiful, Zyla thought. She has lovely blonde hair which always shone their brightest, no doubt slathered with different types of hair products. Big blue eyes with long lashes that almost touched her cheek bones. She was tall and leggy and was never without makeup. A life size Barbie doll she definitely was. I wonder what she looks like without makeup. Zyla laughed at the image that formed in her mind. All of a sudden her eyes filled with tears. I’m nothing compared to Catherine, no wonder Alex doesn’t want to know me, she thought. I’m not as beautiful as her but I definitely am not unattractive. She sighed dejectedly. Zyla felt a presence beside her and looked up just in time to see a person sit fairly close to her. She shifted uncomfortably and moved away slightly. It was a guy with straight black hair and a muscular build. He was dressed in black jeans, black running shoes, a grey t-shirt and a black leather jacket. Suddenly he turned towards Zyla, who jumped slightly and looked down embarrassed, not before noticing that he had black eyes.

‘Hi’ The guy said from beside her. Zyla’s eyes met his and her cheeks flushed red. He was smirking at her and she couldn’t help noticing how good looking he was.

‘Hi’ She replied back.

‘I’m James.’ He stretched out his hand, palm upwards.

‘I’m Zyla.’ She placed her hand into his and felt his fingers curl around hers. His hands felt soft and strong. She reluctantly pulled her hand away from his and instantly felt cold, shivering slightly, she stuffed her hands into her jacket pocket.

‘So do you live around here?’ She asked curiously. She had never seen him before.

‘Na, just scouting the area. My parents are thinking of moving here and we’ve come to check the place out.’

‘Oh, do you like the place so far?’

‘It’s not bad especially if there’s pretty girls like you here.’ He grinned at her.
