Chapter Six

Zyla was sitting on her bed, the covers pulled up to her chin, her arms wrapped around her knees, staring into space. Alex had'nt spoken to her since English class. It had been 3 days. Seeing him walk down the corridors, sitting in the cantene, studying in class, sitting next to her in English but giving her the silent treatment was really getting to her. Every time, Zyla attempted to speak to Alex he would ignore her, pretend that he had'nt seen her, walk right past her as if she did'nt exist. One minute he was dropping her home, speaking to her then the next acting as if she was'nt even there. Zyla's arms tightened around her knees. She had been lost for words when it had all began, gaping after him every time he had ignored her. Her friends had stuck up for her, advising her to forget him and have fun. If it was easy then she would have but Zyla had never felt like this before; not with any guy who had escorted her to school dances and parties. Zyla didn't do dating and letting any guy delve into her heart and she had a protocol to uphold but it was proving to be difficult. His face flashed in her mind and she shut her eyes, shaking her head.

"Zyla dinner's ready". Her mother called. Zyla stood up from the bed and grabbed a cardigan before padding down the stairs and into the kitchen. Her mother was setting the table. She was a beautiful woman with rich brown hair and a slim build. Her mother looked up and smiled, causing her hazel eyes to light up. Many had said the reason behind Zyla's beauty was her mother and she agreed wholeheartedly. Zyla helped her mum set up the table in silence. Once everyone was seated at the dining table, happily eating rice and curry Zyla allowed herself to study her family. Her mother was an editor of a popular magazine and totally loved her 9-5 job. Her father was tall and handsome with wavy black hair. He was a lawyer and a good one at that. Her brother Andy was 6 years old and a copy of her dad. This was her small family and she loved them to bits.

"So Zyla, was everything good today at school?" Her mother casually asked her. Zyla chewed slowly then answered "Same as usual." Since she had met Alex, Zyla did'nt enjoy school as much as before. Everyday seeing the person she liked ignore her was finally getting to her.

"Zyla honey, are you ok?" Her mother asked worried. Zyla looked up. Her family were watching her with worried expressions. She then realised that she was holding a fork full of food half way to her mouth. She hurriedly placed it into her mouth and chewed quickly, nodding at her family. Andy giggled and whispered to his dad "She looks funny". Her parents smiled and Zyla allowed a small smile to slip onto her face. This was the first time she was smiling since Alex had begun to ignore her.

Once dinner was over, Zyla helped her mum to clear up in silence. Her mother always was able to sense when Zyla was not in conversation mood and Zyla appreciated this knowing full well that her mother knew that she would open up to her when she was ready. All of a sudden, Zyla felt a sudden urge to fling her arms tight around her mums neck and she did just that. Her mother was taken by surprise but quickly adjusted to the sudden weight, hugging her daughter close.
