at the age of six, her white blonde hair was in pigtails with pink ribbons hanging from the hair ties. her small arms were crossed over her chest, a pout on her face. she hated dressing up. especially in itchy fairy dresses that her mum was always buying her. ones that she knew she'd probably never wear again in her life. her twin brother sat beside her. happy in his pirate suit, he stared out at the other kids, swinging his feet back and forth. the other kids were chasing each other around the backyard of her mother's friends house.

kyle soon jumped off the chair and ran out to join them. she wished that her mother had let her dress like a pirate like she wanted to but the only response she'd gotten was i'm sorry sweetie but the girls have to wear fairy dresses. she wanted to tell her that she wasn't a girl but she knew she'd only get in trouble. because a six year old was not supposed to be thinking those kinds of things.

so she sat in the plastic chair in silence, tapping the heels of her white sneakers together because she refused to wear those stupid plastic heels that every other girl was wearing. she was uncomfortable. not only in her clothes but in her body.

at the age of seven her hair was beginning to turn red. it hung just below her shoulders but was still long enough to tie up. she had it in a simple braid now, twirling the end of it as she sat alone at lunch. she was comfortable in the silence and the clothes that she had taken from her brothers half of the cupboard. she could feel the eyes of the teachers around her as they whispered to each other about the way she dressed and the way she acted.

she ignored them though. because she didn't have to put up with that, especially from teachers who were supposed to help her through her schooling. Leaving her lunch box on the seat under the giant tree she ran to join her brother and his friends in the sandpit.

they were pushing trucks around, making racecar sounds as they skidded them and flicked sand in the air. she could hear them whispering comments about how one of them should go and kiss one of the girls on the other side of the sand box who were playing barbie.

she was content with digging a hole in the corner and making a wall around her with the sand until a young boy, who couldn't have been much older than her (possibly the grade above), came over and started to kick it down. the snide comment that she should stop trying to be a boy and go play barbie with the other girls hit home and she ran out of the sandpit crying.

when she turned eight she'd changed. she ran her hand through her just-above-her-shoulder length hair once more. astounded at the fact that her mother, who loved her long ginger hair, let her cut it this short. her brothers black jacket hung where it should and the board shorts she was wearing (also her brothers) sat just above her knees.

she was happy with her short hair and her clothing but as soon as she walked into class she was stared at. her classmates were a little shocked. they were new people. people that she didn't know very well. people that didn't know her very well. you see, nobody except her brother and her mother fully understood what she was going through. although she didn't mind.

she hoped that they'd get used to it. walking calmly down to the back of the class and taking a seat she ignored the weird looks and the stupid third grade chatter, keeping her mind on the conversation that her mother had with the principal the night before.

her mum had been angry and was shouting down the phone that disrespecting a third grader and her choices in her way of life was wrong and that kicking a kid out of school for their gender identity was extremely wrong. although the little girl had no idea what the hell her mother was going on about she had quickly run upstairs and shut herself in her room before her mother could have noticed that she was eavesdropping.

but she didn't speak up about the glares in class. just sat in the back of the room quietly, kicking her worn down sneakers together as she listened to the introductions that the teacher was making them do so he could learn the names of his students faster. it was a typical primary school routine and she chose not to participate.
