Lucas and Riley sat in the bay window, where Riley had hoped to fix the awkwardness that was still between them.

"I know you probably don't want to talk about it," Riley said. "But we need to talk about what happened the other day."

Lucas grimaced. "You mean the part when I kissed you in front of your parents?"

Riley shrugged. "That's part of it. Lucas, we're still really awkward around each other when we aren't just friends."

Lucas frowned. "I think we just need time, Riley."

Riley stood up with a sigh. "We don't have that much time, Lucas. When this school year is over, we'll both be off at college in states that are hours apart."

"Would we be better if we weren't together?" Lucas asked.

"No," Riley said. "I like us better together, even if we're a little bit awkward." She walked over to her bed and sat down on the edge of it. "But, still-" She started, then Lucas cut her off.

"Riley," he said, standing up and walking over to her bed, sitting down next to her. "I like us better together, too. And, I think that if we're meant to be together, this will all figure itself out. Like I said, we just need some time."

Riley nodded. "Yeah. I think you're right."

Lucas smiled, then leaned in to kiss her.

Then, the door burst open.

"Ah! There's a boy in her room!" Corey ran in, holding a baseball bat and looking quite angry.

"Ah! The boy is leaving!" Lucas jumped up from Riley's bed and ran towards the window.

"Not yet, you aren't." Corey grabbed Lucas by the foot as he attempted to climb through the window and pulled him back in.

"We need to have a chat, Lucas." Corey said, in a tone that made Riley very scared.

"Okay, but, I'll need you to let go of my foot first." Lucas said to Corey.

They sat at the kitchen table, Corey glaring at Lucas.

"Sir," Lucas said. "You've known me for a while. Why do you still dislike me so much?"

Corey sighed. "Lucas, I don't dislike you at all. I think you're a good guy, and Riley really likes you."

"Okay, then. Shouldn't that be enough?" Lucas frowned. "I'd hate for this to sound disrespectful, but, her and I are seniors in high school now. We're old enough to make our own decisions, aren't we?"

"Lucas, of course you two can make your own decisions. I wouldn't doubt that for a second. The problem that I have is one you can't yet understand, because you don't have a daughter of your own." Corey shrugged.

"What problem is that, sir?" Lucas asked.

"I want to protect her. I want my little girl to be happy, Lucas. She's liked you since the seventh grade, Lucas. If something happens between you two - if something really bad happens - I'm not sure she'd ever be able to forgive herself. I need her to be happy." Corey said. "Do you see my problem, now?"

Lucas nodded. "I hope you won't ever have to worry about something like that happening between Riley and I. I'd never hurt her."

"I know you wouldn't hurt her intentionally. Just be careful, please." Corey sighed. "There's just one question that I have to ask you - one that I've wanted to ask you for a while."

"Ask away," Lucas replied.

Corey paused for a second, as if he was thinking through what he was about to say. "Lucas," he said. "Do you love her?"

Lucas smiled at Corey. "Yeah," he said. "I do."

Lucas was walking back to Riley's room when a hand grabbed his arm. Lucas spun around, turning to face Auggie.

"You going to see my sister?" Auggie asked, raising an eyebrow.

"Yeah," Lucas nodded.

"Well, I need to talk to you first." Auggie crossed his arms.

"Why?" Lucas asked, exasperated. "Why does every person in the Matthews family want to talk to me today?"

"You're dating my sister. I have the right to warn you what'll happen if you hurt her." Auggie narrowed his eyes at Lucas.

"I can guess. I'm sure that if I hurt her, you'll break me." Lucas said.

"I'll break you in half if you hurt her," Auggie said. "And it will be very painful. She's my sister, and I care about her. You better not break her heart, got it?"

"Auggie, I'll tell you the same thing I told your dad." Lucas said. "I'd never hurt her. Never."

"I'm holding you to that," Auggie said, walking off.

Lucas walked back into Riley's room to find her sitting at the bay window, staring off into space with a smile on her face.

He walked over to her and sat down next to her.

"How did it go?" Riley asked. "I'm assuming it went okay, considering you're still here."

Lucas laughed. "I think it went pretty well, actually."

Riley nodded and leaned her head on his shoulder. "I'd be sad if my dad kicked you out."

"I'd be sad, too." Lucas smiled.
