"You ready?" Lucas glanced over at Riley, who sat in the passenger seat of the car.
Riley nodded. "Yeah, I think so."
"Okay." Lucas started up the car and drove onto the winding driveway, which led to the main road.
They pulled out of the driveway and onto the road.
Riley's leg bounced up and down. "How much longer until we get there?"
Lucas laughed. "We'll be there soon."
Riley stopped bouncing her leg and instead looked out the window.
"So," Lucas said. "My parents might not be what you expect. Just, don't freak out, okay?"
Riley shrugged. "They can't be any worse than my parents, right?"
Lucas sighed. "You'll see what I mean."
A few minutes later, they were pulling into the parking lot of a small wooden church. Riley glanced at the building, slightly confused as to why they were there.
"We're here," Lucas said, turning off the car and putting the keys in his pocket. He unbuckled his seatbelt and opened his door, stepping out of the car.
"Okay," Riley said, climbing out of the car as well.
She walked around to the front of the car, standing next to Lucas.
He held out one hand and she placed her hand in it, lacing their fingers together.
"Follow me," Lucas said, beginning to walk towards the side of the church.
Riley followed him, looking around at the building. As they rounded the side of the building, Riley saw a graveyard, surrounded by a wrought-iron gate.
"Lucas," she said. "What is this?"
Lucas didn't respond, instead, pulling her towards the entrance to the graveyard. Riley followed him through the rows of tombstones.
They stopped in front of a pair of tombstones, both of which looked decently new.
"Lucas?" Riley asked, attempting to get his attention. It didn't seem to work.
She pulled her hand away from his, which seemed to get his attention.
"Why are we here, Lucas?" Riley asked, crossing her arms.
Lucas sighed. "You said you wanted to meet my parents?"
Riley nodded.
Lucas gestured to the set of tombstones in front of them. "Well, here they are."
Riley's breath caught in her throat as she looked down at the stones. "Lucas, oh my god."
Lucas gave a small laugh. "Not what you expected, is it?"
Riley shook her head. "Lucas, I'm so sorry."
Lucas frowned. "They would have loved you."
"I'm sure I would have loved them, too." Riley said softly, leaning over and kissing Lucas' cheek.
Lucas sat down on the grass in front of the stones. "I miss them. I miss them all the time."
