Chapter 7
I woke up the next morning feeling just as tired as always and slowly dragged my stiff body out of bed and began to get ready. I threw on some clothes and headed to the bathroom to start getting ready for school. After I was ready I made my way down stairs. As I reached the bottom Becky came bouncing over too me with a big smile on her face.
"Guess what!" she gushes excitedly. "What?" I asked with fake enthusiasm but was actually quite interested in what had gotten her so excited. "Uncle Jeremy is coming to stay with us for a bit!" she tells me with a huge smile on her face. I look at her in shock then make my way tothe kitchen where my mum is currently rushing around like usual.
"Mum?" I said while looking for her. I found her sitting at the dinning table trying to enjoy her morning cup of coffee but was struggling to do so as she was surrounded by paperwork from her office. Even when she is home she never switches off. "Is it true that Jeremy is coming to stay with us?" I ask her. She stops for a second and gives me a quick glance but then carries on with what she was doing.
"Yes. He has a new job close by and needs a place to stay. I also thought you would like having some family around with my crazy schedule at work." she replied distractedly. "You don't mind do you?" she adds quickly, stopping to look at me. Her question took me by surprise. "No I don't mind. It's just quite a surprise that's all." I tell her. I loved uncle Jeremy. He wasn't much older than me really. He was twenty two years old and my mums youngest brother. Due to the close age gap between us we were always quite close. To be honest I was starting to get a little excited myself now that I knew he was staying here.
I left the kitchen and grabbed my shoes, coat and school bag. I also finished getting Becky ready for school. Once we were all ready we headed out the front door and on our way to school. On the way to school my mum told me that Jeremy would be at ours when we got home from school and that made me more excited. He would also pick Becky up from school and watch her while I had my tutoring. The word 'tutoring' always make me cringe slightly. It make me feel... well.... Stupid. I know it was silly but no one else needed a tutor. I think with everything that happened this year with my dad really had me distracted but I just tried tonot focus on it too much.
The school day seemed to fly by and think it was due to me being nervous about the tutor session. It didn't help that all my friends were giving me non stop banter about it all day. The final school bell rang and before I knew it I was making my way to the English department to meet Mr Williams.I slowly walked towards to classroom door. I took a deep breath to calm my nerves and knocked on the door.
After a couple of anxiety filled seconds had passed by the door opened and standing there was Mr Williams. He gave me a welcoming smile which seemed to ease my nerves slightly. "Good afternoon, Alexis. Come on in and take a seat anywhere you like." he said as he moved to the side tolet me in the room. I wanted to cringe at his use of my full name but brushed it off. Everyone I knew called my 'Lexi' expect for the teachers.
I sat down at my usual seat at the back of the room as it was next to his desk so it seemed the best place to go. He was hot n my heels and made his way over and pulled up a seat next to me where Danni usually sat. I felt the nervousness come flooding back at his close proximity. We have never been this close before.
"So, where do we start?" I asked trying to take my mind off of how amazingly beautiful this man actually was. I really needed to snap put of it but having him this close just made me realise how beautiful this man really was. "Well, we are currently spending the term reading Of Mice and Men so what have you learned out it so far? What sticks out to you?" He asked me snapping me out of my little bubble. Oh gosh. I knew the book but I felt as if he wanted a really in sightful answer which he was clearly not going to get from me...
"Well, one man kills his friend..?" I said hesitantly as I knew it was a stupid answer but my mind seemed to go blank under pressure. He chuckled slightly at my answer and replied "Yes you can look at it that way, or you can look at it as an act of love? He did what he thought was right to protect his friend. He knew he would die a horrible death and he didn't want that for him. He wanted to save him that pain."
Truthfully that answer kind of blew me away. I never thought of it like that...The rest of the tutoring went pretty much the same and before I knew it the hour was up and it was time for me to leave. "So is Thursdays still ok for you?" he asked as we stood up. "Yeah, I have no other plans." I replied truthfully.
I slowly made my way to the door with Mr Williams hot on my tail. I opened the door and stepped into the hall way. I turned around and said bye to him as I felt awkward just walking off. "Alexis, don't worry too much about the whole idea of tutoring. I can tell from today that you don't need that much help. You have amazing thoughts and ideas you just need to figure out how to put them down on paper and concentrate more." I was taken back by his declaration and replied with am awkward thank you and made my way down the corridor to go home.
