A year and a half later
"Share the goddamn blanket you pink haired hoe!" Callie shrieked as she fought with Mia, who was currently curled up in a plush throw on the couch beside her.
"Hey, it's not my fault that someone broke the freaking heater because the was a spider on it! By the way, thanks for that Mason." Mia raised her eyebrows judgmentally at my boyfriend, who was cuddling into my side to avoid her wrathful glare.
"Now, now kids. The repairman should be calling any second to book an appointment. Until then, we just have to share blankets like they did in the 1800's." I said wrapping my arms protectively around Mason.
"You know what else people shared in the 1800's? Plagues. I want my fucking heat back, thanks." Callie smiled sarcastically.
"How about we all just turn this into something cute and romantic for the holidays?" Mason chimed in.
Callie smirked before scoffing. "Sorry Mason, we'll pass on the festive orgy, thanks."
I put my head in my hands in disappointment.
"God no. I meant why don't we turn the lights on tree, make some hot chocolate, and watch old Christmas movies!" He squealed excitedly.
"Aw, who could say no to that? What'd'ya say friends?" I ask smiling wide.
Callie's expression remained the same glare from earlier.
"I say we kick the two of you out of the apartment. Maybe then we wouldn't have broken heaters in the first place!" She yelled, her tone filled with nothing but sarcasm.
Mia hugged her girlfriend and snuggled against her warmly.
"I don't know, Cal. Don't you think cuddling sounds nice?"
Immediately Callie's face softened. She wrapped her arm around Mia, pulling her closer, and stroked her hair affectionately.
"Oh, alright, you fucking sappy dorks. Movie time!"
We all cheered and started to get off the couch when suddenly the phone rang.
"You guys get everything set up and I'll get the phone. Maybe it's finally the repair guy." I said as I untangled myself from Mason's arms and stood up.
"Hello?" I answered the phone.
"Hi, Rowan! It's been awhile, honey, how are you?" A familiar voice spoke through the phone.
"Mom? Hi, yeah it has been... three years. I'm great! How are things with you and dad?" I ask her, slightly shocked that she called after so long.
"About that dear, your father and I sort of... split up after you left."
"You mean after he kicked me out and you did nothing? Yeah, go on." I replied bitterly.
"I'm going to ignore that statement for now, Rowan. Regardless, we went our separate ways for a bit, but now he wants to come back and see you."
"Why the hell would the man who disowned me three years ago want anything to do with me now?!" I yelled, earning slightly shocked and sympathetic looks from my friends.
After Callie's dad passed away, we both came to conclusions about our sexualities and decided to tell our families at the same time. Knowing how my parents, specifically my dad, felt about these things, we thought he would act more understandingly towards me if Callie's mom was there too.
That didn't happen. Callie stood up and came out as bisexual and I followed and came out as gay. Callie's mom, as expected, was very loving and didn't have a problem with either of us.
My dad, however, broke multiple of the restaurants dishes by throwing them at me as I ran out of the building and kicked me out that same night.
Callie and I moved right in to our current apartment about a week later, with the help of her mom paying our rent for the first few months, and I hadn't talked to either of my parents since then. Until now.
"He wants us to be a family again, Rowen. He wants to make things right with you." Her voice broke and she sounded on the verge of tears.
I sighed.
"Alright, when's he coming here?"
"He'll be back in town in a few days. I'll call you when he gets to the airport and you can go pick him up."
"Why can't you do it?" I asked sounding more harsh than I meant to.
"Well, Leon was going to since I have work but-"
"Leon? Who the fuck is that?"
"Leon is my boyfriend." I could almost see her pathetic smile through the phone.
"Wow, another one? Let me try and guess this ones age. Oh, I don't know, seventeen?" I laughed spitefully.
"I'll have you know that Leon is turning twenty-one next March." She huffed.
"Poor bastard, how does he do it? He has to fuck you, but can't even have a drink to cope!" I laughed proudly, knowing she had to be seething on the other end.
"Rowan!"
"Bye, mom!" I giggled before quickly hanging up on her.
I glanced up to see my friends staring at me in shock.
"What?"
"I didn't know you could be rude! That was fantastic!" Callie smiled proudly at me.
"Well, I learned from the best."
