The boy ran down the street, his feet pushing him forward fast as he tried hard not to miss his school's late bell. The gates of the school came into view and he quickly spun into the the area. He didn't stop though, his feet barely touching the ground as he ran down the hall towards room 125. He grinned as his hand slapped onto the doorframe and used his momentum to shoot through the doorway and right into his seat. He panted softly, his gold eyes glittering and his red hair a mess but a large smile on his face. The room was momentarily littered with "hey"s and the occasional "Can I borrow your notes for the test?". The boy returned their greetings and requests as quickly as he could, not wanting to disrupt class time. Kim, the boy's best friend, rolled her eyes at his antics before spinning around in her seat to face him.
"Nearly late again I see." She quips, smiling just a bit.
"Yes but the key word there is nearly." He replies easily, putting his stuff to the side and leaning forward on his desk just a bit.
"Yeah yeah, whatever. Have you had a chance to read the news today?" She asked, tilting her head a little.
"Yes, of course, it's why I was nearly late." He gave her a look at the question and she stuck her tongue out at hime.
"A simple no would have sufficed. Anyway, I read a small vampire pack went and totally murdered this human mafia group. It was over a hundred people there. The police say it was out of self-defense but I don't believe them. I mean, why would vampires need self-defense against humans?" Kim made a disgusted face at the thought of vampires. "I'm just glad we don't have to deal with them here."
"Well if you pay enough, you can get into a private school like this one without any night creatures." He quickly say to prevent her from going into a rant. She gave him a pointed look that told me she knew exactly what He was doing. It didn't matter though because the bell rang and the teacher walked in and to his desk.
"Alright, everyone back to your seats and face me so I can take roll."
Kim quickly spun back around, her chestnut hair spinning out a bit. The boy rested his head in his hand, drifting off a bit at the small moment of peace.
Most people avoid the night creatures. If not, they generally treat them badly and wished they would just go back to where they came. I can't understand that. They're, for the most part, like us. They have feelings, they have to eat, reproduce, they have blood... Er, more or less. Everyone in the private schools, the only places that we're truly night creature free, think that just because most of them have fangs and supernatural powers and that they're diets are different from our's are that the night creatures are inherently evil, he thought, I wonder why I think differently?
The boy was snapped from his thoughts as he heard his name.
"Rei... Rei Channing?"
"I'm here!" The boy waved just a bit so the teacher would see him. The teacher didn't make eye contact, avoiding meeting Rei's gaze as if he would burst into flames if they were to connect. Rei was used to it, but occasionally he would become curious as to why all adults seemed to have this mutual trait. He handed in his homework before slipping into his daydreams for the rest of the school day.
When the final bell rang, Rei waved goodbye to his friends and turned to the direction of the small flower shop that his family owned. Once he got there, he gave a few sharp knocks before heading inside. He slipped off his shoes at the entrance, knowing how his grandma was about dirt on her white carpet. A bit ironic since the flower shop constantly had dirt on the floor and could easily be drug up from either of his grandparents.
"Grandma? Grandpa? I'm home!" He shouted into their small home as he slid into the kitchen and grabbed an apple before swinging into the next room in death of my family. He froze when he found his grandpa, the apple in his hand falling from his hand, as he saw him crying.
"Grandpa..." Rei quickly moved to where he was kneeling in front of the older gentleman. "What's wrong?" He carefully reached up and started wiping away the tears but they just kept coming.
"Y-your grandmother... she's been sick for a while now. The medicine wasn't very expensive so we didn't tell you about any of it. Its spread though and now she needs surgery that we can't afford." His voice was calm, though the occasional crack came through. "The only thing we could cut from the budget that would be enough is.... your private school tuition."
Rei blinked, tears welling up in his ears over the news about his grandma. He gave a nod and a small smile though.
"I understand, I can handle myself. The night creatures are not nearly as evil as so many think them to be." Rei gently took his grandpa's hand. The man's shoulders relaxed just a bit.
"I'm glad to hear. I actually already went and enrolled you into the public high school nearby. They have a school uniform but I researched it and they have the lowest amount of night creature killings in the state."
Rei nodded, feeling a bit dazed at the sudden flood of information.
"All your stuff you'll need is in your room. I'm so glad you're taking this so well... oh! Before I forget. They have run out of the male's uniforms so you'll be wearing the girl uniform for a few days. You'll start tomorrow."
"I... what? No wait.. I think I got it. Um... I'm going to go to my room alright?" Rei raised himself on shakes legs, moving towards his bedroom. He went to collapse on his bed when he noticed the box. Sighing, he plopped himself down next to it and opened it. The blue color was pretty, he noted as he pulled out a blue blazer with matching skirt and a white button up blouse. The material was soft and Rei felt a need to try them on. He grabbed a pair of thick, black tights that he wore under his jeans sometimes when it was cold. He pulled all of them on before standing in front of his full body mirror.
Huh... he thought I actually look good.
His body was naturally thin and small, all the running he did in the mornings making it where his body was nicely toned especially in his legs. The black tights accentuated that fact and the blue and white fabrics of his uniform clung to his body nicely. He noticed with a small giggle that the skirt would flare up easily before spinning around and watching it floof out.
He flopped back down on the bed, reaching into the box and pulling out the small handbook. He 'hpfm"ed and threw it on to his desk without reading it. His eyes scrolled over to the glowing red numbers of his clock. He groaned at the time before quickly shucking his uniform and slipping into a pair of overly fluffy pajama pants and then falling into his bed for the last time.
Don't want to be nearly late for my first day at a new school... maybe the second day but not the first at the very least. These were his last thoughts before drifting off to sleep, his dreams filled with flashing fangs and chins dripping blood.Rei walked to school the next day about thirty minutes earlier than what was needed. The blue uniform blazer was nowhere near warm enough for this morning so he had pulled on his favorite leather jacket, the leather worn and soft. The cold November air blew through his hair as he walked to A.B.O.V. High School, effectively keeping his red hair from getting in his eyes but freezing his ears. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw hungry, red eyes staring at him from the alley way. Rei only ducked his head and sped his steps, hoping that he wasn't the target of those multiple pairs of eyes. He was wrong though as they came out do the alley, easily catching up with the human. Rei quickly slipped into the school courtyard just as one seemed to be reaching for him. This caused one of them to run into the wall with a curse and Rei immediately popped his head back out before shooting out his hand to help the other up.
"Hey, are you okay?" He asked, ignoring the fear that shot through him at the sight of fangs.
"Um, I'm Rei, it's my first day here." He continued, helping him up.
"Oh! That means you still have three weeks." He said, nodding to himself.
"Three weeks?" Rei asked, though the other only shook his head and smiled down at him.
"Don't worry about it. I'm Daniel by the way." He stuck his hand out and Rei readily accepted it.
"Oh hello Daniel, do you... do you mind showing me around?" Rei asked, taking his hand back and sliding it into his pocket.
"Of course, but... why are you wearing a skirt? Ah, not that I care or anythin'. I was just wonderin' you know?" Rei blinked in confusion before looking down and blushing lightly. He had honestly forgotten he was wearing a skirt.
"They didn't have any male uniforms in my size yet. Thank you for showing me around." Rei smiled brightly at Daniel before the vampire smiled and gave a sharp nod before starting to lead the way. Rei followed him readily, glad to already have a friend. He didn't notice the glowing green eyes that followed him.(A/N: Alrighty, so. A new story. I actually have several of these chapters already written but I don't want to do what I did with Viridian Feather where I post a ton of chapters in one setting then loose my plot bunny for a while so I think I'm going to limit myself to one chapter per week, maybe two if I'm feeling nice. Anyway! If you like this, please leave a comment or vote because I live off praise. Until next time lovelies! Mwah! *air kisses for everyone*)
