Three years later
Iris' POV
The peaceful wind blows through the forest whilst the river flows gently down the stream.
I sit by the river bank leaning on a tree whilst the kids play.
Rae is five now. Her hair is a puff of dark curls which suit her tanned skin perfectly. She has a cheeky grin always on her face and always has a glisten in her eyes. She's human.
Toby is also a werewolf. He's 8 -too young to shift- and I only know he's a wolf because of his scent. He has the kind of look that says if you gave him white wings and a halo he'd make the perfect angel. Blue eyes, blonde hair, perfect smile and always cheerful.
The other kids a vampire (apparently). Not the kind of person you'd expect to see a wolf with because we're kinda mortal enemy's or something like that. His names Sam and he's 10. His hair is black hair and has brown eyes, normally dirty. His skins pale and lifeless -that's the vampire in him I guess.
Finally, there's me. Werewolf, 18, brown hair, brown eyes and tall. I'd put my life on the line to save them. I'm usually covered in cuts, bruises, mud and stuff but my wolf takes care of most of it. We have a system and it works. I trust that if anything happened to me, Sam would look after them; but nothing's going to happen to me.
I would try to join a pack, the only problem is that I could never leave these guys. Why not take them to the pack too? No pack of wolfs wants a vampire. Plus, they have no use for the 'human', I'm too 'dangerous' but Toby's perfect. I'm not going to lie, I'm jealous. Soon, I'll get him into a safe pack, get Sam into a colony (or whatever the vampires call it) and Rae to a kind, new family. I'll just go off as a lone wolf, survive, visit these guys.
It's night by the time ive finished thinking. Sam, Toby and Rae all come back and I smile.
"Can you look after Rae and Toby tonight?" I ask Sam.
He frowns, "You're going out?"
"Hunting."
"Can't I come?" He begs, "please? I need the practice, and Toby needs to learn how to look after-"
"No Sam! You and Toby need to learn how to be kids. Sure, I ask you to be in charge of them now and then, but I'd never expect you look after them."
"Is this because I'm a vampire? You don't trust me because I'm different."
"If I didn't trust you, I'd put Toby in charge. I've been looking after you got three years; you should know I don't care what you are."
Suddenly, a growl breaks through the air.
It's close.
"We have to go," I say plainly.
I grab Rae and pull her onto my hip before clasping Toby's hand. Sam runs off a head and we follow close behind. Vampires are fast, wolfs are faster. I'm pulling a pup and carrying a human which is why I'm only just behind. We have a method and it works: That's all that matters.
Trees whip passed, some hitting me whilst others I dodge swiftly.
It's the rouges. They've been chasing us since they found out we escaped. Apparently they never leave a job unfinished.
I can sense them getting closer by the second. We can't just run.
"Sam!" I yell.
He stops and looks at me, sucking in breath. I place Rae into his arms, "Take Rae and run. Toby, try to keep up with them. Get distance and hide, I'll find you when I'm done."
Sam nods, knowing that there is no time for arguments. I watch them run off into the distance before turning around and growling when I meet the threat.
Five rouge wolfs. Each one is snarling and snapping its jaws at me, scratching its claws on whatever it finds.
Disgusting things.
I quickly shift into my wolf as I try to find their week spot.
Bingo.
I instantly pounce at the one closest. It's obvious they all underestimated me. I don't spend long fighting, I'm not in the mood. I take out the first one with s bite to the neck, tearing the flesh away and leaving it to choke on its own blood. The second one makes the first move, sending its claw to my face. I whimper as its razor sharp claws cut my skin, sending me flying back to the floor.
I recover quickly. The second my wolf is back to her feet, the rouge and I jump up at each other. We both stand on two paws as we snarl and snap at the other. I manage to get the advantage and push the second rouge to the ground. Just as I'm about to end the pitiful creatures life, I feel a bite at my back leg. A pained noise leaves my snout as I feel the blood draining from my leg.
Crap. I think to myself as my soft brown fur is dyed red.
I snap at the wolf and take it out with one firm bite.
Then a scream pierces the air.
Rae.Sam's POV
Rae screams as the large wolf that none of us recognise steps out of the shadows.
At the sight of him, I push Toby and her behind me. He's a threat. I notice Toby lower his head at the wolf and know immediately that this is either an alpha or a beta.
I should have stayed with iris to help. She's probably in trouble and I've just run away. She probably needs me. I wouldn't have even met this threat if we all stayed.
The wolf growls territorially, we must be on his border.
"I'm sorry," I say quickly, "this is all a mistake. We were running away from- and we didn't pay much attention to- and now we're here."
The wolf keeps growling.
Toby speaks up, "Please, sir. Our friends in danger and we need help."
