My mother and father use to tell my sister Keira and I stories of days before the laws changed. They would say that people could go out at night past their street and there was no curfew. There where no restrictions on leaving town or people coming in it, there was even a person called a president that was chosen to help lead by the common people, and scientists weren't hunted like murders for trying something new. Back then people could choose for themselves what they thought was right. "Those are just stories." my mother would say sullenly even though I could see it in her eyes she missed those days. Now everyone was assigned jobs backed on the need from the official governing council or OGC for short. However most people in my neighborhood call it the dictatorship. None ever in front of anyone important of course. Any speaking against the OGC was Illegal and punished. Never question the role your given. That is the mantra always said to me, and so it went for everyone. Except my mother, My father would joke that she cheated the system by getting assigned to her dream job. My mother was a biological scientist. Back then scientists where hired by various companies to make cures to others inventions that went wrong by clumsy inventors. All went smoothly, until one day when one scientist had tried to preserve and expand on the research of a chemical that changed the DNA of everyday people. He started to test it and that's where he went wrong. The government placed all involved in prison and, made any biological study illegal. I was only six when my mother came home and was in pieces, but I still remember it as though it was a movie I replayed in my head over and over. She put up a good face for us kids but we could see right through her paper thin smile. I went to her room that night and I pressed my head to the door. She was crying like never before and my fathers comforting voice. "Im so Sorry my dear. I know you loved that job." His voice was deep but soft. I felt as though I could see him consoling her through the door ,but I dare not go in. Even then I knew she would try to hold it in.
The time didn't get better however. Facilities kept closing due to the ban and my mom eventually landed a higher level government job, but it was never the same. It only continue downhill from there, on the news almost every night you would see arrests of scientists, biologists, and many alike who were just trying to make the world a better place, and being shot down in flames. The law changed after months of this drastic recall. In the year 2032 the Government discarded laws such as under age drinking, drugs use, and many other acts they considered to menial a task to continue to bother with. "Instead..." the government man said "we shall be looking for the criminals trying to ruin our way of life. The ones that are trying to change who we are, and what we are to become in our own homes." You could tell he was excited about the prospect and he awaited what he thought would be an enormous applause. None of that horrible stuff would have stuck to me that much if it wasn't for that one day.
I walked in the door after a long day of sixth grade and headed straight for my room, I was bushed. My feet hurt from the special private school shoes I had to wear, my shoulder hurt from my heavy backpack with all my books in it, and my stomach hurt from all the bullies that decided that it would be fun to hurt the youngest of them all. I sat down on my bed, kicked off my shoes, and dropped my backpack. Dad had said moving up a few years in school would be great. I was so bored in fourth grade so I started to get into trouble. You know the usual, talking during class, passing notes, drawing in my notebook. The teachers had tried everything to help me more enjoy my time at school but I had already learned everything they had to teach me. So the only move they had left at that point was to place me in a higher grade, that way I wouldn't be bored and might make some friends that had my same intellect. However the kids in my class apparently where from the Stone Age. I rolled my eyes just thinking about them. Even my own sister didn't help me. They are all jerks. I thought. Well all except this one kid Conner. He helped me out when the others where being cruel. Conor was a tall, black haired kid with blue eyes. He is a year older than all the kids in my class, which might have had something to do with why they where more willing to leave me alone after he walked up to me. I probably would have pondered for seeing as I had the time. I'd finished my homework for the day at study hall, but then there was a knock at the door, but I couldn't help but go look. My father was in the basement grading papers per the norm. He is a college history professor, when he got home every day at two o'clock he would go downstairs to go over The next days material and grade assignments. Which usually would take a few hours. So that means... "KEIRA!!" I shouted as I walked to her door. The music was blaring through the walls so I knew she wouldn't hear me. "KEIRA, SOMEONE IS AT THE DOOR." The racket finally shut off and the door shot open and she stormed out mad. "Fine I'm going!" She screamed then stomped off towards the door me following behind her. The rapping on the door came again and Keira ripped the door open. A man in a police uniform was standing there a grim look on his face. "Hey sweet heart can I speak to your father?"
