Chapter 17

***A/N: When I first started writing this story, it was going to be a love story with some kind of twist. When I began writing, I had no idea what the twist was going to be; I just knew I needed one. And last night, as I was writing Chapter 16, I came up with the twist. It was crazy, and extreme, and exciting, elements that this story is lacking pretty badly at the moment. I realized that to make this twist work, I had to go back and add some things to my previous chapters. So that’s what I did. It’s pretty much the same for the most part, just small differences here and there. The only huge difference is the prologue. The prologue is basically just a sneak peek of what’s going to happen to Leighton and Harry. So if you haven’t already read that, go back and read it! It defiantly gives the story more edge and adds to the plot. So yeah, thanks for reading and I hope you love this story as much as I do!

When I wake up the next morning, Harry is no longer in my room, but I smell bacon and hear voices from downstairs.

I stumble down the steps, rubbing my eyes sleepily as I do. But then something stops me in my tracks.

“You’ll never find me. You can’t. I’m safe here and I won’t be dragged back into your game.” He pauses for a moment. “What you’re doing is wrong, so wrong. I can’t be associated with you anymore. You need to stop contacting me. If you call again, I won’t hesitate to call the police.” Harry hangs up and slams his phone on the counter, rubbing his hands through his hair.

I wait a few moments before coming around the corner.

“Good morning.”

He looks up, his mouth immediately forming into a smile. “Good morning. I um- I made you breakfast.”

I laugh. “I see that.” I look around the counter. He made us biscuits, bacon, eggs, and placed a large bowl of fruit of the counter. “You made enough to feed a small village.” He laughs when I say this. “How long have you been up?”

“Two maybe three hours.” He shrugs.

“What? You didn’t have to do all this, I appreciate it but I would have been fine with PopTarts.”

His smile fades. “You don’t like it?”

“No, no I love it; I’m just saying you didn’t have to do all this.”

“Oh.”

“I love it, okay?” I say and he looks up.

“Okay.” His smile returns.

We talk quietly as we eat, when suddenly I hear my front door click open.

“Leighton?” I hear my mother call up the stairs.

“I’m in the kitchen!” I call back.

She climbs up the stairs and enters the kitchen. “Oh um, hello Harry.”

“Good morning.” He returns.

“Harry made me breakfast mom.” I tell her.

“Oh, how sweet of him, thank you Harry.”

“No problem.” He nods.

“I just came to pick up some clothes and take a shower.” My mother tells us. “Maybe you can come by the hospital later. The doctors said that they should be able to let Ryder have visitors starting tonight.”

“Is he okay?” I ask, not sure if I want to know the answer.

“He should be fine in the end.” She says as she looks down at the floor

“Oh- okay.”

“Well I’m going to get my stuff and head back to the hospital. You two try to have fun.” She smiles at us.

As soon as she leaves the room, I bury my face in my hands. “This is a mess.”

“Hey,” I feel Harry’s hand on my shoulder. “You can do this, we can do this.”

I feel safe with him, I feel comforted by him. “You’re right. We can do this.”

He smiles at me and we continue to eat our breakfast.
