It all happened in Elementry School. Kai was always the talk of the little guys that wanted to be like him, the little girls who wanted to "date" him and the teachers who greatly respected him at such a young age.
Me? At that age I heard things bout him and his family and how his father walked out on him and that he rarely sees his mommy. I always thought that was all his business, not mine so I didn't pay the rumors any mind.
I had never even actually seen Kai even though we went to the same school and our classes were near each other's every year. I always heard that he did strangely well in his classes considering his family issues and that he was also very strong for his age. Whenever I'd walk into the classroom, he'd be the topic even though he was never actually there. I always wondered, why talk about someone who's not there and is never going to be there?
Every time a girl would come up to me and ask;
"Have you seen Kai in the lunchroom?"
"Do you like Kai?"
"If you don't like Kai, who do you like?"
I always responded with;
"No, I haven't and I don't care to."
"I don't have a crush on him."
"The world is a big place, girls. I have a whole street to meet boys on!"
However, there was one year, one faithful year, when my lost opinion on Kai changed. In fourth grade, Kai was transferred to my class with Mr. Hiney. I'll never forget the way he entered the room with his hair wet from the rain, patted down from its normal afro state. All the girls started to swoon and whispers went around the room exactly when he set foot on the dry carpet with his wet and muddy shoes.
I looked at the clock, he was twenty minutes late to school. Back then, I was obsessed with studying, grades and above all, time. If someone was late, I was obsessed to the point where I wouldn't want to even be associated with their presence, a trick my father taught me.
"Kai, son, why are you late to the first day of this class?" Mr. Hiney spoke casually to the young child.
Kai shrugged as he looked around the class and met the eyes of every kid in the class. That included mine. He paused on my eyes and glanced at the empty seat beside me, offering me a smile, obviously not knowing where to sit. I raised my eyebrows at him.
"Kai, son?" Mr. Hiney brought Kai's attention back to the teacher. His head snapped to Mr.Hiney and grinned.
"Sorry sir, I slept in today." He answered confidently.
I scoffed quietly at his remark and the fact he found something as valuable as time as a joke. Kai looked back to me and the seat beside me. I also looked at the seat beside me and then at the other seats that were available to him. One of them near the most popular girl in school, Hannah Joy was directly behind me. I didn't mind, as long as he wasn't close enough to bother me and my studies. I met his eyes once more and glared at him.
Nope, I thought.
I grabbed my Backyardagains backpack and placed in in the seat he was eyeing. His eyes widened as he watched me decline his offer. Suddenly his nose scrunched up and Mr.Hineys voice ran throughout the classroom.
"Kai, please take any empty seat you would like. We will get you caught up then, son."
Kai's eyes once again found mine and they began to get closer as he walked towards me and my seat. Thinking he was going to the seat with Hannah, I got back to my multiplication table. He stopped right beside the chair that my backpack was sitting in and stared at it.
