Chapter One
Alice’s POV
“Alice, dear! Wake up! Alex called and told me to tell you he was going to call you on Skype in ten minutes!” I was woken up by the sound of my aunt pounding on my door.
“I’m up! Thank you Aunty!” I got out of bed and ran to the bathroom. Eight minutes until my brother calls. I had time to get ready. I quickly ran a brush through my hair and braided it into a side braid. After that, I brushed my teeth. Makeup wise, I just applied a couple of swipes of mascara onto my eyelashes after curling them. One more minute until he calls. Crap!
I ran to my closet and pulled on a pair of jean shorts. As I was doing that, my laptop began to ring. “Ugh.”, I grabbed my laptop off of my bed, clicking the answer button just in time.
“Alice!” my twin shouted out. “Hey! How are you?”
“Alex! Dude, I miss you so much it’s not even funny.” I said as tears started to fill my eyes.
“Hey, don’t cry okay? We’ll see each other soon. I promise.” Alex said, trying to reassure me.
“If you haven’t noticed Alex, every time you promise that, you always, always break it. It’s not fair. You get to go everywhere with Austin, and I can’t. Just because you don’t feel the need to tell him about me. It’s stupid, Alex.” I cried out.
“You know it’s for your protection, Alice.” he told me, sternly.
“Protect me from what? Hate? Oh yeah, because it’s not like I don’t get hate at all over here in California.’ I said sarcastically. “Wait, where are you?”
“On Earth.” he replied.
“Alex, really, where are you? The background seems so familiar… Wait are you –“, I didn’t finish my sentence because I got up from my chair and rushed to my door. “-outside my room?! Alex?! Oh my gosh. What are you doing here? Why are you here? Oh my gosh!”, I flung my arms around him and cried.
“Hey Als. What’s up?”, he hugged me back, laughing and placing a small kiss on the top of my head. “I missed you so much that I had no choice but to fly to California to visit.”, he said as he hugged me tighter.
“Oh my gosh, Alex. Please don’t leave me here. I hate this place so much.” I pulled out of the hug and went back inside my room, sitting on my bed. I patted the spot next to me, signaling for Alex to sit next to me.
“Why? You mentioned something about getting hate? What’s up with that?”, he asked.
I sighed, “These girls at my school. They keep ganging up on, talking smack for no reason, saying that I have no one left for me. At one point, they actually beat me up because I talked back to them.” I pushed my hair back with my hand. “But it’s not only them. Pretty much the entire school and couple of teachers.”
“Wait, why?”, he asked.
“Because, they found out about me. They found out my weaknesses, my strengthens, they think that the reason I’m here in California and not Texas is because I “lost” everyone.” I fell back onto my bed as more tears poured down my face. “They made my life hell. And it gets worse and more worse, day after day.”, I said as my voice cracked. “I just want all this pain and hurt to end.”
“Alice, there’s always going to be people out there trying to bring you down. Remember back in San Antonio when there was another set of twins? And they did everything that they could to bring us both down? But we never let them. Because we were always better.”, he chuckled at the memory, attempting to cheer me up. “And remember that one time when we were in the car with mom and dad? We were driving around town, all of us eating ice cream, singing along to the radio, being happy. But we didn’t know that was the last time we would see both of our parents together…”, his voice trailed off as he started to cry.
I remember that clear as day.
-flashback-
“Alex, Alice! We’re going out for ice cream! C’mon, let’s go! Meet your dad and I in the car.”, mom shouted up the stairs. Alex and I were both four at the time.
“Coming, mommy! Alex, hurry up! I wanna get ice cream!”, four year old me yelled at my twin brother. “Alex, c’mon!” Soon Alex came out of his room, following me down the stairs. We rushed to put our shoes on, and then ran out to the garage.
Minutes later, we reached Cold Stone. Mom had ordered strawberry ice cream, Dad got chocolate mint, and Alex and I shared a regular vanilla. After getting our cups full to the top with ice cream, we got back into the car. We drove around San Antonio, singing along to the songs on the radio. We were all being happy together. Until we were near our house. Dad had pulled over to the side of the road.
“Kids,” Mom had said. “Dad and I have to tell you something.” Alex looked at me with questioning eyes.
Dad began to talk. “We don’t know how to tell you this but, your mother and I are separating.” I may have been only four, but I knew what this meant.
“You-You’re getting a divorce?,” Alex sadly asked.
“Yes. Now you can both stay with me, or one of you can go with Dad,” Mom said.
“I’m staying with Alex.” I had firmly stated.
“I’m staying with Mom. Sorry Daddy,” Alex said.
Our parents nodded, and Dad turned the car back on. When we had reached our home, I jump out of the car and ran up to my room. I saw Alex do the same. Mom went to help Dad pack up all his things. About two hours later, Alex and I were called down.
“I’ll visit when I can okay? I may not be with your mother anymore, but I am still going to be you father. I love you. Don’t ever forget that,” Dad told us, before kissing us on our heads, and walking out the door.
Little did we know, that would be the very last time we saw our dad. We got a call at ten o’clock at night, saying that our dad had died on impact in a car crash caused by a drunk taxi driver.
-end of flashback-
“Alex, don’t cry,” I comforted my older brother. “It-It wasn’t your fault. It was the taxi driver’s fault. We couldn’t do anything about it. We didn’t know it would happen to Dad.” I said.
“I wish that I could’ve done something, you know? I could’ve said something else. Tell him I wanted to live with him. Tell him I love him again.” Alex exclaimed, continuing to sob.
“I would’ve lost you too.”, I told Alex, rubbing his back and hugging him. “I can’t lose you. You’re my best friend.”
After a couple minutes, I hear a knock at the door. “Just a minute.”, I softly said. I got off of my bed and picked up and then placed Alex’s head on a pillow, where he continued to sleep. I put a blanket over him, and then fixed my hair and clothes. I walked over to my door with a smile on my face.
“Hi. I’m Austin, Austin Mahone,” I heard as I swung the door open.
